Greetings to the BCC faithful,
I am currently exploring the option of buying a BCC within the near future. I have read several of the Pardy books, and contacted the Sam l. Morse Co. Everything I have read leads m to beleive that the BCC is the way to go in a cruising boat. However, as a novice to this arena, I would appreciate feedback on the merits if the BCC. Ultimately, I want to hear what BCC owners have to say about the BCC, both positve and negative.
Also, because of finacial reasons I will most likely have to buy a used BCC. (A new boat would be great, but graduate students are not a wealthy lot). So, what type of problems have people encountered in the older boats, and what specific items should I pay closer attention to?
Thanks for your time, and any replies would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Mike Smith

Hi,
My wife and I are currently living in San Diego aboard our Ranger 33.
Im an artist by trade and we have been sailing for only about a year. While working on and refitting our Ranger I came to the conclusion, as have many people, that the more systems, the more cost and maintenence time. We decided that if we were ever to realize our dream of a cruising life style we would need the best boat we could afford with the least amount of things that could break. While I make enough for us to be comfortable, I certainly couldnt afford to maintain a large boat with
all the niceties that people find so crucial (i.e. pressure hot & cold
H2O, shower, enough electronics for a navy gunship).
Weve always held the BCC to be our dream boat but felt them out of reach considering our meager income. Then we saw the Mandy at Larry Dudleys in Ventura. She was owner finished by a man named Don Girot.
Now I dont know this man but he must have been a real sailor. Shes
finished like an old wooden work boat. The counters are galvinized steel
and the wood is fir from and old farmhouse back east, left mostly bare.
Every detail was thought out with an eye towards simplicity and
durability. She may not be as slick as a factory finished version, but
Ill never stress over her ability to age very gracefully. She has no head (porta potty), no sink, and no shower (read no extra through hulls). All of the things that have turned people off from this vessel drew us like moths to a flame. We are confident that with a vessel like her we can realize our dream of safely and realistically traveling and working from port to port for however many years the lifestyle remains appealing. We presently are in the process of selling our Ranger 33, if you know any one interested in a very well maintained and clean racer/ cruiser/ live aboard, and will close the deal on the Mandy by Dec 21st. We feel another dream is coming true. Hopefully well be getting used to that.
Sincerely,
Steven and Karen Mast

My own boat is a goldy oldy from the days when SLM was only selling hulls &
decks. She was finished by a third party yard in San Diego, Bill Clark Custom
Boats. I don’t think she has the same fine finish of the SLM finished boats,
but she has the same character, sailing qualities, and bullet-proof strength.
I love her.

There’s an amusing quote from Perry (I think) that goes something like “…buy
the boat you’d most want to be seen arriving in the anchorage in…”
