Chesapeake Rendezvous

Hail Bucephalus, Getta-Wae Dhow, Godspeed, Calypso, Iduna, Sirius, Surprise, and Aloha! (did I miss anyone?)

According to my research, we are the Bristol Channel Cutter fleet of the Chesapeake Bay! Some of us, Iduna, Aloha, and Sirius, have decided that it would be very exciting for us to plan a rendezvous on the Chesapeake this summer. Are you interested?

Please email me at kate@highstream.net and let us know what you think.

Give me a good email and phone if you can so we can coordinate.

Let me know what DATE might work. We are thinking early to mid June.

Let me know about PLACE. Depending on who can make it, we’ll pick a central place. Suggestions are welcome.

Aloha Annapolis, MD
Bucephalus Norfolk, Virginia
Calypso York River, Virginia
Getta-Wae Dhow York River, Virginia
Godspeed Chesapeake, ? Virginia
Iduna Baltimore, MD
Sirius Annapolis. MD
Surprise Annapolis, MD (going to Maine)

It might be tough for everyone to make it, but let’s give it a shot. Who knows, we might get our story in Cruising World. We might get Mark to make us a nice web site.

Your ideas are welcome. Let me know what you think.

It will be great fun!

I think your idea of organizing a rendezvous in the Chesapeake is excellent.  Every year we try to have one on the West Coast.  We have BCC's that sail down from San Francisco when we hold it in Southern California.  Many of the Southern California boats sail to San Francisco when we hold it there.
Without exception, fun is had by all and many ideas are shared.

Hi BCC Chesapeake Bay Group. My wife (Joanne) and I bought a BCC last Sept. (#93) new name Ariel.  We may be moving from Houston, TX. to your area late Spring or early Summer and hope to have the chance to rendezvous with the group also.

By the way, were somewhat flexible as to where we locate geographically but it does need to be in the State of Virginia (could be on the eastern or western shore). We are interested in a house on the water with a dock (at least 5 MLW for Ariel). If anyone has any suggestions or could recommend a particular location or realtor it would be appreciated.

Thanks

Let’s hear it for a rendezvous . . . June is great (not early early - I
teach and will have fac. meetings through the 9th or so) It will get our
butts in gear to get the boat ready to go! (we have to set sleeping
arrangements up for the crew - Julian will be almost 3 and Madeleine 1)

Contact us at sailingbeagles@yahoo.com

Sounds wonderful! We look forward to seeing more BCCs (as well as some
people/boats we know from previous lives . . .)

Nica and Jeremy (Calypso, BCC #6) and Julian and Madeleine

PS. Rob Reith - did you buy Pelagic? We moved from Clear Lake to York River
Yacht Haven (that’s where Calypso is) and would love to talk to you about
where to live . . . lots of great areas in VA. Just watch personal
property tax (varies by county) when you decide on where to live!

I too got the virus message (my ISP scans for viruses before forwarding me the mail)
but your last message made it through cleanly.

Mark Gearhart checking in. Well, we’ll be in Virginia for a
while, towards the end of June. But, the boat’s all packed
up and we won’t have enough time off work to prepare. So, I
think we’ll have to pass.

When you determine the time and place, I’d like to know in
case we’re in the vicinity. We’d love to stop by and visit.

Ahoy East Coasters-

I am excited to see there are quite a few positive responses
concerning the Ches Rendez. I anticipate attending but am NOT
AVAILABLE during the following dates; May 26-June 14 and July 7-July
26. Additionally, because of light air and high temps/humidity, I
would not desire anytime in August.

I recommend the following anchorage for the rendez:

“Pirate’s Cove” on Trippe Creek
NOAA/NOS Chart #12266-Choptank River
Posit: 38-42’43"N/076-7’15"W

I have used this anchorage before. It easy to find, has a nice
seabreeze with little shoreline development, is well protected, just
the right size, and has good bottom. It is only 2.5nm upstream from
the Strand at Oxford, yet remains fairly well secluded. On weekends
it is frequented by others for rendezvous. A Thur or Fri arrival will
assure us the perfect spot.

There is a really cool Tiki Bar with pool and excellent resturaunt at
Herrington Harbor South which is a perfect daysail (read race) from
Oxford back across the bay. HHS is a full service marina with
hotel.

Please post your comments/questions concerning Pirate’s Cove or
contact me directly!

Calypso here . . .

This sounds nice, although I am not sure we on Calypso can do a lot of Tiki Bar/restaurant stuff - our crew members, who will be with us, are under 3 - and that has never really been our style anyway - don't let that stop the group, though.  We are big on great anchorages with easy shore access, and we have successfully hosted 10 people at once on board (yes, all below) for dinner.  We will have a baby monitor with us, and we could put the kids down for bed and then head over for a night out on another boat.   I'd bet rafting isn;t anyone's favorite thing to do (it isn't ours, for anything much longer than a picture) How long a visit are we planning?  And, for those who have done more sailing in the Chesapeake than have we - how long does it take to get to the Choptank from York River (the charts are on the boat and I am lazy . . .)?  Does anyone else in the group have young children? (and ideas as to how to configure safe sleeping arrangements for the crib set)

I am sure we'll have more questions as the time approaches, but that's all for now.

What fun this will be!

And for other readers/dreamers who don't yet own a BCC - I'd say the more the merrier.  It's all about the comradeship anyway.

Cheers,
Nica

The date is Ok by IDUNA and the Choptank is fine.  My only concern is the Choptank maybe a little far for the south bay group.  Anchorages are better than marinas for us.  If the Choptank is about 1/2 way for all of us then let's do it.

Jeremy and Nica:

We like kids. I think it is great you include them in your adventures - simply wonderful.

We are not much for the bar scene but it is OK.  Wine is always carried as ballast in IDUNA and visitors are always welcome.

If anyone is sailing from north of the Chesapeake and you need "local" knowledge please send me an E-mail.

Fair Winds,

Rod
