Delrin FID

Can anyone think of a reason why you SHOULDN'T use Nylon as a replacement for the Delrin FID.
I found a comparison of the two. The shear and compression strength are about the same. Nylon would deform a bit more under a load and it will absorb some water. But it is fully half the price of Delrin.

i have a piece of low cost, low tech oak. i do not think it deforms
much and wonder why the change was made. in this position was it a rot
problem? is it worth switching to the new stuff? how expensive is the
non-biodegradable stuff?

John,

Good question…basically the change was mine. After years of cruising the
oak had compressed so much it was impossible to remove without distroying
it and oak and ash is a wood that will rot and I don’t want this to happen
to any
of our boats so for the small cost…during construction…we use 1"
delrin fid which
about $30 and a 2" acrylic pad under the mast. If you are not having a
problem with
compression or rot, leave it but keep your eye on it. Also suggest you
epoxy or use a
metal insert in the notch of the bitts. In the past, Sam only cut the notch
out of the Samson
Posts. This exposed the end grain and my bitts rotted out below this point;
so have some
others, so check that also next time you take the bowsprit off.

Happy holidays…Gone 'till next year!
Roger
