deltaville area info?

Hello group:

We are currently keeping Calypso at York River Yacht Haven, in Gloucester Point, VA.  We live in Charlottesville, about 2.5 hours away.  Friends visiting this weekend suggested that perhaps the Deltaville/Irvington area might be closer (incrementally) and perhaps cheaper (if there are more marinas).  ANy ideas, suggestions, points of interest, recommendations?  The other thing that might entice us into moving is better weekend jaunt possibilities - there are not that many from York River.  If anyone has other ideas, please forward them!

Thanks.

Hi there Calypso,

Deltaville is pretty good. You can do a lot of sailing down around the Potomac, Solomons, the Choptank, Smith Is. Its fabulous. And youll be closer to the Great Rendezvous. In fact if you work on it, you might just be able to move your boat at the same time. Lets see if we can get you more info.

Kate

There are a number of marinas in Deltaville. While the river is
quite scenic, there is not much to see on the Piankatank however, as
a low bridge about Glebe Point prevents further cruising. Milford
Haven is unique, but you have to go under a lift bridge to get in.
Going out for a weekend, it is kind of a haul to get south to New
Point Comfort and into Mobjack, which I imagine you have
already “done” anyway.
I would suggest the Rappahannock as a better alternative, perhaps
at Yankee Point Marina on the Carotoman River. I went there for a
regatta a few years back. Very friendly, lots of interesting boats,
relatively new owners interested in upgrading the place and
attracting sailors. Facilities are not like Sarah’s Creek, but they
do have a decent little ship’s store. If I recall it was quite
inexpensive.
I do not know much about Irvington, but others haver said it is
nice.
Good Luck

Steve Price Marine in Deltaville is where we’ve kept Godspeed while
working inland. We kept her there on land for over a year once at
$75/month and no property tax for the duration of the storage.
Actually, if you keep your boat in either Middlesex, Lancaster,
or Northumberland counties, these rural areas might be less expensive
tax wise. I’m not sure; would probably take a little research.

Steve Price Marine is actually a yard with a big working building
(not a marina). In the winter, they must have a least 100 boats
there, up on land. Fishing Bay Harbor Marina where I sometimes get
fuel. Pretty nice marina. You can also anchor just off the marina
in a very large protected bay with 10-15 ft water depth. This marina
has a website, http://www.fishingbay.com, and it would probably be
one of my top choices.

I especially like Deltaville for its geographic location.
You can sail north to the Great Wicomico in a couple hours, and
south to Norfolk in a day, and you can just about see the Eastern
Shore on the horizon if you look east. They also have a West Marine
in Deltaville. I usually end up going here or to Tiffany’s on the
Great Wicomico for my supplies.

Thanks all for the information.  We are starting to piece ideas together, and we know we'll just have to do a drive over there to check it all out (there seem to be LOTS of marinas to choose from!)

Anyone have any skinny on Reedville?

Again, thanks. We'll be in touch when we get things figured out!  (Kate, thanks for the idea of moving at the same time as the rendezvous - would be nice but we are paid up at York River through August and I don't think they give you anything back, even if they rent the slip.  Blech.  Besides, nobody seems to have any room right now and they will in September.)

Reedville is Godspeed’s documented home port. I don’t think I’d
keep her in town because the Menhaden fleet is there. These big WWII
mine sweepers come from the ocean and boil down their catch for
cosmetic oil and fertilizer. Well, you can imagine the smell. It
would be like living next to a paper mill. Consequently, I don’t
think this town is big on marinas. The town is very quiet. They’ve
tried to start restaurants, but there just isn’t enough population.
The town is actually the dead end of a road. Back in the
early century, they had the highest per-capita income in the country
due to the fishing fleets, but now it’s just retired people and
crabbers in VERY big houses. Nearest large grocery store is about 20
miles away in Heathsville, so its definitely a quiet place. They
have a fishing museum there. I’ve heard its pretty good, but I
haven’t been there yet.

Up river are mostly private residences and farms; not much in the
way of marinas, but since this is a very rural area, there’s not
much boat traffic and you can anchor just about anywhere you please.
You can actually sail all the way up to the head waters, about 15
miles inland. It does start getting shallow after the bridge, so
you have to time it for high tide.

Tiffany Yachts is about 4 miles up river from Reedville. They are
a small family owned business, building custom wood power yachts up
to 70 feet. Kind of like the power version of a Hinkeley. If you
need custom woodwork done, this is the place to have it done. I
kept Godspeed there on land there one winter, but you have to make
arrangements early because they don’t have a big lot. Their rates
are the same as Steve Price in Deltaville, $75/month.

I don’t know, Nica and Jeremy. I’d say Reedville it might be worth
checking out. But I’d probably rate Deltaville a bit higher, mostly
because of the Marinas. If you could find a private residence to
dock Calypso on the Great Wicomico, near Tiffany Yachts before
it starts getting shallow, then I’d probably give the advantage
to Reedville. I’d might also give Reedville a very slight advantage
on property tax.

Hi everyone  - been out of town or I would have responded earlier. Actually Joanne and I just returned from Virginia where we signed a contract on a home on the Piankatank River. We plan to move from Texas sometime this summer. The house is on Stampers Bay (North Shore) across from Berkley Island and its got a dock with 7+ at MLW. The interesting thing is going to see whether we can get Ariel (Hull #93) under the Piankatank Bridge (Route 3). The bridge clearance is 43 at mean high tide. The length of the mast on a Bristol Channel Cutter is 44 9 (our masthead light is below this). The distance from the base of the mast to the waterline is 3 6 which should make any passage interesting --  especially at high tide. If for some reason this doesnt work We plan to use one of the nearby marinas  -
