One of our own distinguished himself on CBC radio here in Canada. Derek Lundy spoke magnificently on CBC Radio 30/10/2014 on a piece called “godforsaken sea” as part of the “Ideas” programming. Nice job Derek and for those who don’t know Derek is an author/historian and a welcome addition to our fleet. Well done “cutty sark”.

Listen on line I am sure you all would enjoy, the show talks about high latitude sailors and the kind of animal who dares to sail there… a good listen. Its not just about the technical stuff but more importantly the mental! Enjoy.

Here’s a quote from Wikipedia:

He “achieved bestseller status with his sophomore work, Godforsaken Sea: Racing the World’s Most Dangerous Waters, an account of the harrowing 1996 Vendee Globe round the world single-handed sailing race. It has been called “the best book ever written about the terrifying business of single-handed sailing…” and Time Magazine called it “one of the best books ever written about sailing.”[2] The book was a national bestseller in Canada and has been published around the world in translation.”

His book on life on a square-rigger is also excellent–“The Way of a Ship: A Square-Rigger Voyage in the Last Days of Sail”. It’s based on a relative’s journal.

We enjoyed meeting Derek and BCC GERTRUDE a few years ago in the Canadian Gulf Islands.
