Moving day

Hello all,

Happy day, it looks like Kokopelli is moving from the marina dry dock into
my back yard to resolve some security issues.

When speaking with the transport company they mentioned that it was possible
to load and unload the hull using a tow truck
rather than a crane/boom truck costing tens rather than hundreds of
dollars. While I am intrigued, since I only have experience
moving with the assist of a crane to say I am wary is an understatement. At
the same time I know a fella who told me of a special
trailer rig that was used to transport his boat that opened around the
hull and “scooped” it up off the ground without the need for
any external assistance at all, so I have an open mind.

Does anyone out there have any experience or knowledge of unloading with a
tow truck? I expect we’ll be using the travel lift to get
out of the marina.

The trailer you referenced is called a hydraulic trailer.   The trailer, from a top view, looks similar to a two pronged fork.  The wheels are attached to the two prongs and the space between the two prongs is open.  Hydraulic lifting arms are attached to each prong of the "fork" frame.  The trailer is backed around the boat and the lifting arms are positioned then operated to lift the boat off its stands.  If the boat is to be moved a long distance, cross braces are connected between the two prongs of the trailer and the keel of the boat is lowered with the hydraulic arms until the keel touched the cross braces.  The boat is then strapped to the trailer.  Unloading the boat from the trailer is the reverse of the above mentioned operation.
 
IDUNA was moved off the farm to a boat yard with a hydraulic trailer then loaded unto a truck for the trip from Maine to Maryland.
 
Most major boating areas will have a hydraulic trailer service.

Don, I've moved boats around a yard and even lauched them with a Brownell hydrolic trailer like Steve Osborne spoke of. They are made exactly for that purpose. I've also *seen* boats jacked onto and off boat trailers successfully (though it looked a little hairy). Using a tow truck, I never heard of but I'd ask for details of how they intend to work it before giving it the okay.

Do you have the ballast in yet? How heavy is the boat? I would think a 'cherry picker' small crane could life an empty hull if he had the proper lifting straps.
