Navigation Lights

Our BCC, IDUNA, is only equipped with a tricolor and steaming light.
I have thought of several places to mount the lights. The stern
light will be located on the windvane mount. Location ideas for the
starboard and port lights include: cow vent dorade boxes, lantern
boards and outside of bulwark rails near bow. We are interested in
where these lights are located on other BCC’s. In addition, is
anyone using kerosene navigation lights? Fair Winds, Rod

cabin Nor’star Flicka, may be viewed at

Our boat, Fritha, uses kerosene navagation lights.

Rod,
I like running lights mounted down at deck level for
looks but they are not as effective as the masthead
lights at sea. Mounted on the cabin, dorades or even
light boards on the shrouds, they can be blanketed by
the genoa particularly from the low side.
Of course if you are using kerosene lights you
haven’t much choice, although they are better on
boards in the shrouds since it keeps them higher and
dryer. We had kerosene running lights on our first
boat and we had to refill them at least once during
the night which can be messy when a sea is running.

keep well,
Stan Roeder “Waxwing” BCC #22
