New Owners

My wife and I have become owners of an older BCC (#28, 1980 edition) and are
happy to join the website. I have a few questions.

  1. Most of my fittings are SS and I would like to know where to purchase the
    equivalent bronze,
  2. Has anyone had experience with the trim-tab self-steering and is willing
    to share their experience?
  3. Has anyone made bearings for the rudder and what material was used?
    Thanks for the help.

A & B Industries (ABI) is the most mainstream supplier of bronze
hardware. Much of their offerings are available from retailers such
as West Marine/Boat US/etc. Their address is:

1160-A Industrial Ave.
Petaluma, CA 94952
USA

Phone (707) 765-6200

I understand the Sam Morse yard can be very helpful in supplying
hardware, even if you are interested in doing the refit yourself.
Last time I had some parts priced, SLM were very competetive.

I’ve had to have my bronze pintles and gudgeons retooled once. There
was excessive slack in the fit when I got the boat. So much so that
the rudder would occasionally thud when underway, and thud often when
at anchor. I had the pintle and gudgeon turned on a lathe and had
bronze inserts pressed into the gudgeons, reducing the play in the
final assembly to zero. I’m happy with the result and still have no
perceptible play.

I’d advise you find a good machine shope with the right lathe to be
able to accurately mount the gudgeon and pintle so that when they
turn them, you lose as little material as possible, and end up with
well alligned pieces.
