Hi Mark - it looks like we were "running out of space" in the photos section.  Yahoo limit is to 30 MB of space... groan.  I deleted one picture to bring us back under the limit.  Let me know if this fixes the issue you were seeing.  This menas that we cant post any more pictures here as we are the cap...  We might be able to use some other free photo site like Shutterfly, ofoto, etc to host pictures and provide a link to it from here...

Hello Folks:

First, let me introduce myself: My name is John Cole, I am,
primarily a blue water sailor, but circumstances have abandoned me
on dry land. (My last trip was delivering hull no: 122 from Newport
Beach to the Chesapeake Bay - I didn’t do the whole run, but that’s
another story!)

However, I run a company Coledata,Inc., (www.coledata.com), and am
the new webmaster for www.samlmorse.com, and am concerned about the
issues you are having with the Yahoo/Geocities site.

The Sam L. Morse website is currently undergoing a rebuild, which
can, if YOU so desire, include a forum.

It must be understood, however, neither Sam L. Morse Company or
Coledata, Inc., will have any control or editorial rights within
this arena, and we would hope that Jeremy would remain as moderator,
although he has not been approached on this topic.

The site will contain no advertising content whatsover, will have
unlimited space, and the only cookies produced will be the same
logon cookies that you currently have for the Yahoo/Geocities pages.
There will be no charge for access - please accept the generosity of
Sam L. Morse Company.

OK, Guys, it’s out there: Comments, complaints or otherwise to
jcole@coledata.com - If YOU don’t want this to happen - then, very
simply, it won’t.

Regards
John

Hi everyone. Happy New Year.

Regarding the post by the new Sam L. Morse webmaster, John Cole.

I'm glad to hear that there is a new webmaster of the Sam L. Morse factory. Sumio can use the help...he's been saying he'd add a link to RogueWave for a while so maybe John Cole can help with that.

Regarding the chat board. It is certainly nice of John to ask about hosting a board. While there are some problems with the Geocities board, I think that by virtue of being an owners group, the BCC board should remain independent. As sailors, we depend on ourselves.  We need to have control over our site and not depend on anyone else.

I'd worry about the extra cost for Sam L. Morse in hosting the board as it would take more money to maintain it. I'm not sure that we should expect more funding from Sumio at this point as it is hard enough to maintain the factory website. And what if there is no more funding...all is lost. Maybe a little donation to Jeremy would be a better idea...or we all chip in to get him a new BCC!

Personally, I'm happy with the BCC Owners Group the way it is. We do ask a lot of Jeremy and Nica who have given of their time to keep it going. Geocities is not perfect, but it works.  It works pretty good.  If anything, we should ask Jeremy and Nica if they need help or a break. I'm sure someone could step up and help.

I wonder what Jeremy thinks, having not been approached on the topic.

And, maybe John Cole or Sumio can describe what he has in mind for us.

As for me, I vote for independence.

Hello Kate:

Let’s address your concerns.

As I stated in the original post, Sam L. Morse will have no control
over the forum, we need a moderator to do that. Neither Sumio or I
have much to add to a BCC forum, Sumio because he has a very vested
interest, and I because I am not a BCC owner. Therefore, I am asking
for someone to take contol of the site.

Secondly, don’t be worried about cost to Sam L. Morse - there is
none. My company is an internet service provider, therefore there
are no monthly bills to pay - our only cost, which is minimal as we
do it for all other forums on our servers, is an occasional upgrade
to software.

As you will have seen on other forums, they layout and navigation is
way advanced over the Geocities system, primarily because Geocities
have not updated since the late '90s.

Modern forum software carries many features that you currently do
not have - for example: a search capability, a private message board
between members, the ability to view messages by thread, the ability
to have messages in distinct categories, and an interface dedicated
to the subject in hand - in this case, the BCC and the FC.

As far as Sam L. Morse is concerned, the forum has three benefits:

  1. It is a goodwill gesture to BCC owners and potential BCC owners.
  2. More importantly, perhaps, it is a source of ideas, a “heads
up” on potential problems, and an excellent knowledge base.
  3. It is a great research tool for potential BCC buyers - after
all, if you are going to drop a cool quarter mil into a new boat,
don’t you want the ability to discuss the product with existing
    owners?

As I said before - it’s up to you guys. Just let me know!

Kate: I will talk to Sumio about the link, and I will drop by next
time I’m in Annapolis (I have a couple of clients there, also in the
boating industry.)

Regards
John

I utilize many forums like this one on yahoo, some related to boating and others to engineering and software items I use in my business. It is not uncommon for a software firm to host and moderate a yahoo group for users. The extra breadth of knowledge you gain from having access to the tap root of the creators/builders is indispensable.

Having dealt with Sam L. Morse during both the Roger and Sumio
eras, I can confidently say that I have never worked with a more honest and
customer friendly business in my entire life. I therefore do not share
Kate’s independence concerns.
I agree that we don’t want Sumio spending money
unnecessarily. Your response suggests that the cost to Sam L. will be
negligible with the quality of the groups site taking a big leap
forward…for what it’s worth, count me a yes…

Tom

I completely agree with Tom’s observation about the Sam L Morse Company where the
relationship between manufacturer and the customer is personal and genuine. Sumio and
Tommie really care about the boats that they build and the people who own them.

Sumio has offered to provide a new dimension of customer support and I for one think
that it’s a great idea. Let’s move the group to where it belongs and take advantage of the
new capabilties that this will provide.

Tom

I see nothing wrong with the move and a lot of potential good…
particularly in the ability to post photos with text.

I realize the number of posters here has been limited simply by the
small number of owners, but I think an easier and more workable forum
layout would help generate more posts with better dissemination of
information.

So I’m in favor of the move and would hope Jeremy is too.

Aloha,

I have come to agree that moving the BCC Owners Group board to the ColeData server my work out for everyone. My concern was based only on the fact that becoming dependent on a "private" server that should cost money for hosting. Given that it is difficult enough to keep the Sam L. Morse website up to date, I figured that we could end up with less capability. I also know that the site it can be a lot better than the geocities site will ever be.

And, believe me, I have no concerns or questions about Sumios genuine love and caring for all owners and lovers of BCCs. I do feel that there will be some extra cost to Sumio but if he's willing to support the site, let's go for it.

Happy New Year

Kate
