ob storage

i have a old johnson 2 hp. it is not terribly reliable and my rigid
dinghy is not registered so i do not ussually use it, but prefer to
row. i keep it aboard mainly for use with my softtail avon when
needed. a total tear-down of it is scheduled for this winter to see
if it is worth keeping or replacing.
i made a teak bracket that clamps to the boomkin. upper part is L
shaped with a brace. 4 bolts-2 inboard and 2 outboard- with vinyl
sleeves clamp it to a piece underneath. it works well, is readily
accessible and i loop a cable around the boomkin to lock it up. it
does foul a loop of mainsheet on rare occasion when gybing. the
dinghy could potentially be impaled by it in a very rough anchorage.
i do not store gasoline in the lazarette, but on deck. it is the only
thing i allow as permanent on-deck storage.
the yamaha 4 strokes were recently badmouthed in the SSCA bulletin
due to service being unavailable outside north america. the warranty
is void if they are not flushed after each saltwater use. i was
thinking of buying one as a replacement before i heard that. i had a
honda 15 on my cape dory that i was pretty happy with. tohatsu/nissan
and suzuki all got good reliability ratings in the SSCA equipment
survey. i have found sources like practical sailor do not have a good
way to evaluate reliability, ease of owner repair or availability of
convenient dealers (anything outside walking distance to the water is
a big pain when cruising) which i am much more interested in than
noise level, gas capacity, or minor weight variations.

I would appreciate any thoughts about suitable places to store a 2
horse outboard. I’ve read the threds about boomkin storage but there
must be other alternatives such as stern pulpit.

Greetings,
Ok i’ve been lurking long enough. I am the previous
owner of Pelagic #93. I built a simple mount in the
aft lazarette for our Honda 2hp. 4cycle. The motor
mounts verticle with the lower unit through the small
acess hatch in the floor of the lazarette. I must say
it is the best solution for stowage I could imagine.
After more than 6k sea miles it has never gave us
cause for concern at all. Never any movment or
fuel/oil spillage. We found that this is no boat to
have extraneous equipment on deck when the going is
rough. We ran the motor on a Cherub. Worked great
and gave us fantastic fuel economy.
Regards,
Russ…

Russ ,
Thanks for that solution. I spoke with Sumio yesterday who suggested that
very thing.
