Outboard Storage

I have an old West Marine inflatable and am planning on buying either a Honda 4-stroke 2hp or Yamaha 4-stroke 4hp outboard.  Has anyone with a BCC had experience storing an outboard? If so, where?  Also, does anyone have any opinions about either of these engines?  The Honda weighs in at 28lbs and the Yamaha at 48lbs.  I was hoping to store it in the lazarette while underway, but the extra size and weight of the Yamaha is a concern as is getting it on and off the boat.  Any comments about outboards, inflatables, and BCCs would be appreciated.

Ahoy  Wayne,   check with an outboard repair facility for mechanical problems that can be anticipated.
Most mechanics that work on various makes of outboards, have their favorites, and can give you details of repairs on them.
Also tell them how you plan to store it, because a friend stored his flat and salt water ran up the shaft and that corroded the aluminium housing and the resultant white powder froze the shaft solid. He stores his motor vertically now.
Yamaha has a good rep here in OZ, and the local outboard shop uses a home brew mix of water proof grease and ATF fluid to put on the threads liberally, on all bolts.
Also tell the mechanic that you are going cruising and will be putting it away without a fresh water flush or rinse off, most times.
Hey, what did you find out about health insurance ?  Did I see health insurance available to members of Seven Seas Cruising Assn. ?

Wayne,
Would you store an outboard and/or gasoline in your closet at
home? How much worse would it be in the lazarette, which is vented to the
cabin, and constantly being bounced around?

I store my Honda 2Hp on a bracket mounted across the boomkin. I used an old
Edson-bronze step, mounted vertically and through bolted it onto the
laminated teak board at the stbd end. I would have preferred to attach the
teak board with a clamping arrangement however, the board was already
through bolted to each of the boomkin members with 3/8" bolts. (Originally,
the board was used to mount a Ratcliff windvane, which I have removed.)
For security, I use a cable and lock. This is not a perfect
solution -security wise, but does locate the OB in an area which does not
conflict with any storage eliminates safety issues andoffers easy access.
Also, the motor is easy to lift while in a dingy and set in the same
mounting position on the Edson “step”.

Wayne:
Previous owners of my boat installed a stainless L
bracket with teak pads on the boomkin to hold an
outboard. No idea where they got it … it doesn’t
look homemade. I don’t like the weight of my 5 hp two
stroke out there, but it makes putting it on the
dinghy quite convenient. If you’re interested, I’ll
take a picture of it and send it to you via Mike
Pearson.
