Hello Tom,
I had to take the mast down to bare wood - heat gun stripping, bleaching, and
started finishing from scratch. I’ve decided to use Cetol - my first
experience with the stuff. I got two coats on before coming home for the
rain. I’m not fond of the orange tinge, but I’m planning on finishing with
the clear/gloss. I brought the spreaders home and have 3 coats cetol + 2
coats gloss on them. They look pretty good. The gloss finish makes a
difference for me. Are you using it? I was tempted to try Armada. They
claim similar performance, less pigment, slightly better price, and you can
choose to start with the gloss product. I might buy a quart to try on the
boom gallows, when I get around to scraping them.
For the rest of the brightwork, I’m increasing our inventory of canvas covers.
I just finished making a cover for one of the cockpit coamings. It fits
surprisingly well, so I’ll make it’s twin. Anything that I can keep covered,
I’ll continue to use varnish on. I’ve been using Interlux Clipper Clear and
I’m reasonably happy with the results - it gives a fairly hard, abrasion
resistant finish.
I’m probably headed back down to the boat tonight, depending on the weather.
I’ve been coating the mast first thing in the morning, before the sun gets to
it. It is about 150 miles from here… I do it in about 2:15 hrs. I’ll say
hello to Maggie for you.
I’m currently paying 2.50/ft on the hard. Since I’ve been out, I understand
the rate has climbed to 3.50 and just recently to 5.00! If I go in the water,
I think It’ll be prohibitive to rehaul for the winter at YRYH (200/mo slip +
150/mo dry+haulout). I’ll have to see how the maintenance work progresses.
I currently don’t have a heater and would like to install one. We really
froze coming north from Florida in March/April 1997. I’m thinking of putting
in a wood burning stove. As we’re only likely to use the boat for weekending
for the forseeable future, I’m not worried about the quantity of fuel you need
to lug - besides, I’m I bit of a pyro and think it’d be fun. Maggie recently
installed a Fatsco Chummy, which I’d like to see when I head back down.
Apparently the company still have some inventory, and I should get a brochure
next week.
I gather Mike Pearson writes a BCC newsletter. Good stuff! Could you give
some contact information? When we bought the boat in 1991? the previous
keeper of the list was ducking out (serious illness). I don’t think we ever
have been on anyone’s mail list.
