Re: Painting the Mast

my mast is painted from the factory, a kind of orangish yellow that looks a lot like varnish from 20 feet away.  i repainted it last year with plain old benjamin moore enamel, same color, using a brush.  only 1 year but still looks good, no adhesion or fading problems.

The previous owner of my BCC had the mast professionally awlgripped.  It has definitely stood up well.

Rod,

I bought a new mast last year from Forespar, the manufacturer of the original mast. The new mast was painted with the Awlgrip System. The previous mast was also painted with Awlgrip.
It is one of the best marine paint systems available. It is very expensive and required several steps to do the job correctly.
You first sand the mast, then you etch it with a etching solution that is part of the system, then you put a 2 part zinc chromate primer on, then one of their sanding primers like the 545 and finally the color coats (2 or 3).
New mast photo attached....

I concur with Steven Osborne’s mast repainting procedure. After
experiencing corrosion under the stormsail track of my Forespar mast
several years ago, I stripped the mast and used this same method to
restore it to better than new condition. Lots of work, but worth it.

Steve:
Thanks, U.S. Paints is not recommending the zinc-chromate primer because of environmental concerns about the toxic chromate salts used in the system.  This information is from a personal conversation with the U.S. Paint representative in our area.  U.S Paint's current procedure includes the etch, sanding primer and paint coating.  I plan to communicate with U.S. Paint in St. Louis, Missouri to confirm this information from the U.S. Paint representative and also to ask what type of service can I expect from the current recommended painting system for aluminum.

Question: I notice that everyone seems to be concerned
about paint systems for doing the mast. I’m wondering
if it is practical to have an old mast anodized?
And if it is an option when buying a new mast.

My black anodized stick still looks perfect after more
than 20 years of service and wonder why I don’t hear
of it being done anymore. Environmental reasons? No
one offering it?

When I ordered mine from Forespar or maybe it was
SparCraft?, the only color options were ‘clear’,
‘black’ or ‘gold’. I don’t remember what the additonal
cost was for the anodizing but I doubt it could be
more than a professional awl-grip job and certainly
lasts longer.
