Re: SABB ALTERNATOR & RADAR

Stan:
Thanks for your input.  The alternator on our G engine is also rated at 35 amps.  I plan to install two golf cart batteries this winter (Trojan T105's).  We are trying to keep the boat's electrical system simple but are considering radar.  Lenora and I both want to cruise in Main and visit Lunenburg, Nova Scotia and those northern waters.  Fog is a problem in these areas.  Although one can navigate in fog without radar, it seems prudent with respect to the safety of the boat and her crew to have radar in these waters.

Any comments from BCC owners who have sailed Maine and/or Nova Scotia.
I would also be interested in feedback from BCC owners on radar units with respect to:

        reliability,
        power consumption,
        brand & model,
        radome mounting position, etc.

I use a simple 35 amp alternator with a cutout switch so I can charge at full capacity (about 25 amps) while on anchor. You have to watch it because this is not a tapered charge, but since I don't have a lot to run off the batteries, I don't have to do it very often. The two solar panels tend to keep the batts up at the high end unless we are in an area where the tv works. I do have two 6-volt golf cart batteries and hand start the engine.

At one point I had a 85 amp alternator with a regulator that could darn near kill the engine when it kicked in when the batteries were low.  Also, I had the regulator hooked up with the 35 amp for a while but never seemed to run the engine underway when I didn't want all the power going to the prop instead of sharing it with the alt.

I have to admit I don't like being a slave to 'boat systems' and thus keep things as simple as reasonable. (Our varnished exterior is an exception). Our refrigeration is propane operated. No electronics other than a portable high seas radio receiver and VHF. Manual windlass. Electric lights because they are less problematic than kerosene. Wife instead of girlfriend!

Good heavens, man. IT SNOWS IN MAINE!

It even gets really cold there. Like it's way up north!

Anyway, I agree that radar would be a definite plus in that area and with the new lower weight and lower price units it is the best aid to navigation for the conditions expected. And while there is sometimes wind when the fog rolls, it most often calm so running the engine to power up a radar is a natural.

dry decks and warm seas to you,

Stan
