I previously sailed a cutter and stood at the ready to deploy running backstays when necessary. On my BCC and in many photos of others I’ve seen there are none. Is this because the lower aft shroud is far enough aft on the BCC to perform the same function?

I think you are correct. There is an extra stay…some call intermediate stay, that takes the additional loading on the rigging and spar. If you follow this stay to its attachment point at the lower spreader you can see how this eliminates the need for the running backs.
