SABB ALTERNATOR

Jeremy and Stan:

What is the output rating of the alternator on your Sabb G engine and
the amp capacity of the battery bank on your boat? I am considering
install two 6V golf cart batteries as the house bank on IDUNA. The
starting battery is the hand crank.

I use a simple 35 amp alternator with a cutout switch so I can charge at full capacity (about 25 amps) while on anchor. You have to watch it because this is not a tapered charge, but since I don't have a lot to run off the batteries, I don't have to do it very often. The two solar panels tend to keep the batts up at the high end unless we are in an area where the tv works. I do have two 6-volt golf cart batteries and hand start the engine.

At one point I had a 85 amp alternator with a regulator that could darn near kill the engine when it kicked in when the batteries were low.  Also, I had the regulator hooked up with the 35 amp for a while but never seemed to run the engine underway when I didn't want all the power going to the prop instead of sharing it with the alt.

I have to admit I don't like being a slave to 'boat systems' and thus keep things as simple as reasonable. (Our varnished exterior is an exception). Our refrigeration is propane operated. No electronics other than a portable high seas radio receiver and VHF. Manual windlass. Electric lights because they are less problematic than kerosene. Wife instead of girlfriend!
