Sail Cloth Weight

IDUNA's sail plan drawings specify 7 oz material for the working jib, main and staysail and 6 oz for the Genoa.  Cloth weight for the storm staysail and try'sl is 9 oz.  I am interested to learn what weight fabric is used on boats which have been cruised extensively.
IDUNA was cruised from the San Francisco area through the Panama Canel and points east including the Carribbean, and east coast for 5 years.  The third owner cruised her to St. Martin and back to the Cape Cod area.
Rod

Rod, my first set of sails was 8 oz. on the main and
staysail and 7 on the yankee. The second set was 8 on
the main, 7 on the staysail and 6 on my roller furled
genoa (130%). I have never used a stormsail by
triple-reef the main and I have one reef in the
staysail.

I’ve used this combination only twice in 20 years and
in retrospect doubt if I would have rigged a trysail
before conditions became so bad I would want to be
messing around changing sails. (I have no second track
on the mast for a trysail so it would involve
replacing the main with it and thus a lot of work on
deck in bad weather.)

Thanks for the reply.  When you refer to bad weather are you referring to Force 6 to 8 conditions?

Just a quick question…Can a mast be specified to
have dual tracks when purchasing a BCC new?

Yes, It’s a factory option as of my boat #118, just finished…

Art,
I would be very careful about adding a storm sail track to the mast,
from past experience. My mast on Aldonza #86 was made by Forespar with the
extra track, and I had corrosion problems serious enough to warrant
removing the track, then refinishing the entire mast. Expensive and very
time consuming.

Hmmm. I had to look those up. By the Beaufort Scale
the wind would have been closer to 10. The seas were
different in that we were in the Gulf Steam off the
Carolinas and they were easily mast height but very
‘thin’ in that you could see the pale green of the
sun-lit water a good ten feet down from the crest.

Of course they broke all over us with the normal
accompanying base-drum whomps and screeching wind.
Storm are very noisy things. I found you can lower the
adrenalin factor by 50 percent by just stuffing your
ears up.

These estimates are only that, since we had no
anemometer and seas always look big when you’re at the
bottom of the trough. I do know a Swan 65 turned and
ran before it back to Savannah and a 68’ Hatteras had
to be ‘rescued’ by the Coast Guard (one engine
failed). The Swan reported wind gusts to 70 but I
don’t know what he was using to get that figure, or
where he was in relation to us (Pre-GPS and no sextant
sight for a day).

All I can tell you is that it developed into the first
named tropical storm of '86 and it was on June 6, our
20th wedding anniversary.

I can’t say enough good things about the way the boat
performed. Both when we heaved to for the night and
the next day when we too decided to run off.

The second worst time…well that’s another story.
