Scuttle hatch. Again!

Hey Jeremy,
Did I understand from a previous post that you are working
on your hatch again? What about your epoxy job in place of the
polysulfide?
I have to admit that the epoxy job I did on mine a year ago is
failing.
It was great until about a month ago. It started to crack. Very
badly in some places. I guess thermal or moisture related expansion
and shrinkage differences between the wood and epoxy is the problem. I
really did not need this problem now.
Where do we go from here? Back to P.Sulfide I guess.
Regards,
Russ…

Russ,

Yes, unfortunately, I am working on the hatch again. I’ve got some splits
at the wood/epoxy joints as well. I think it is thermal, possibly
aggravated by the fact that I have a dark green canvas cover on it. I have
a 6" round port light mounted though the center of the hatch. It is a snug
fit and the crack pattern does suggest expansion of the bronze caused it.
I’m going to enlarge the opening and increase the diameter of the holes for
the through bolts.

I plan to fill the cracks with epoxy/graphite. I hope this isn’t an
experiment gone bad. I think it would be impossible to remove the epoxy!

Let me know how yours goes.

Regards,

Jeremy
