Spar Weights

Hi all,

I took a scale to work today. The hollow spruce mast with radar antenna, mounting bracket, internal wiring, spreader lights and steaming light weighs 270 lbs; the boom with end fittings, 65 lbs and the gaff with saddle, 35 lbs. The four mast bands, spreaders and standing rigging (Dyneema) weigh 95 lbs. So total weight of spars and standing rigging is 465 lbs. I would like to know how that compares with the standard Forespar aluminum rig? Heavier I’m sure, but by 50 lbs or 250?

Thanks in advance.

Ahoy David , Although I am not able to provide the total weights of a Forespar mast, for your comparisons, I am able to provide the extruded aluminum weight per meter.

I had a mast extruded here in Singapore and the extrusion section drawing is attached below.

The engineering drawing calculates a one meter section weight of 5.734 Kg per meter.

There are many other parts and fasteners to calculate as well .

Thanks DW.

Based on that I think my rig will be about 30 per cent heavier. My vertical center of gravity is lower with the shorter mast so maybe that will offset the effects of the heavier rig.

Thanks for help

David , is your rig a gaffer ? If so , Mark Fuller of BCC Xiphias wants to upgrade to a gaff rig , so your calculations might help him as well .

How to avoid a double post or how to deleat one ?

DW,
Following some heavy storm damage that included dismasting I decided to bring her back as a gaffer. Happy to share info with Mark.

David - have you completed the re-rig?
I’m sure I’m not the only one who would love to see some photographs.

Mike.

Mike,
Not finished yet but getting close. I have some progress pics on my blog at www.bccrebuild.blogspot.com
