I live here in Hampton Roads. It depends upon what you are
looking for. Atlantic Yacht Basin, just south of the Great Bridge
locks, has a great deal for in-water (freshwater even) storage during
the winter. If you pull the stick, they can put her in the shed. Do
not know about summer. They are not owner work friendly, however they
do good quality work and have a well stocked ship’s store.
Another place is Atlantic Yachts, right at the junction of the
Dismal Swamp and Chesapeake-Albemarle Canal split. Minimal facilities
(used to be: fire up the generator for electricity), just a travelift
and a huge gravel parking lot but very friendly. Sub-contractors can
be arranged to do work. No in water storage. Quite out of the way
for land transport, but would be a good place to leave the boat on the
hard for a while. Cheapest place around.
Very convenient to downtown is Norfolk Boatworks, again just a
haulout spot, owner work friendly, but pricey. They can do work on
the boat, do not know much about it.
My favorite marina is Rebel Marine on Willoughby Spit, right at the
mouth of Hampton Roads. No haulout, but a friendly, funky spot, not
too expensive. Not too convenient to public transport or groceries,
but someone would likely give you a ride if needed.
I do not know much about the fancier places in town, for bigger
$/more facilities try Waterside Marina or Tidewater Marina.
Further up the bay is Sarah’s Creek on the York, where Calypso
lives. I liked it when my old boat was there. Moderate price, good
value.
A large yachting center is in Deltaville, lots of yards and marinas
there. Do not know much about them.
Even further up the Bay, the list expands exponentially. Mark
Gearhart may be able to give you a better idea about some around the
Potomac area. The place the Pardey’s kept Taleisin for a couple of
years was in Callao, out in the sticks.

If you need any more info on Hampton Roads or if you are going to be
here before mid May, drop me a line. We have a spare vehicle you can
use if needed.

Place at the Dismal/ C&A canal jct is actually “Chesapeake Yachts”.

I can recommend 3 marinas mid-chesapeake bay.
Steve Price Marine is in Deltaville, on the
Rappahanock River. Its a small do-it-yourself
yard with a West Marine nearby, and this yard
has one of the few authorized Yanmar repair
shops in the entire region. Chuck is a very
good mechanic, so its a good place to go if
you need engine work. I’ve had Godspeed here
several times for long-term storage and work.

Tiffany Yachts is in Burgess, on the Great
Wicomico River. This is a wood boatbuilding
shop and they have produced everything from
dingys to WWI PT Boats to 75 ft modern sport
fisherman’s. This is not a do-it-yourself yard,
but if you need professional wood work, this
place can do just about anything in wood.
I usually take Godspeed here for bottom paint
since the yard is very close to my home port.

Krentz Marine Railway is in Calleo, on the
Potomac River. This is where the Pardey’s and
the Tillett’s kept their boats. This is also a
do-it-yourself yard.

All three are small family run businesses way
out in the sticks. Usually, a stray dog or two
will come to greet you when you arrive. There
are grocery stores nearby. There are motels
nearby, but at Steve Price and Krentz you
can stay aboard while there.
