windlass

I have an ABI 800 manual windlass and need to replace the o rings. Does anyone know a source for neoprene rings in small quantities? Also, it was lubricated with 140wt gear oil which I have had a hard time finding. Would packing it with grease be a suitable option? Thanks for any suggestions,

McMaster.com stocks O-rings. I would try to locate a local source. Look in the yellow pages under either packing, rubber or O-ring. I am currently in Charlotte, NC and will return to Baltimore late tomorrow afternoon. If you can not locate a local source, I have a source in Baltimore.

If it were my windlass, I would pack it (1/2 to 2/3 full) with Shell Retinax LT II grease

This is a water resisitant (marine) grease. I used this product in IDUNA’s prop hub, stuffing box and to service the grease fittings on the Sabb G engine. If Shell’s website does not list a dealer, the Shell people seem to be friendly over the phone.

Rod,
Thank you for your reply. I’ve sent in an order to McMaster-Carr. Not sure what I’ll do with the other 249 o rings but at least I’ll have a few spares. I’ve also used the Retinax on my Sabb so that will be an easy fix, Thanks again,
