A Nor''sea tale

Dear List
As the Norsea 27 is designed by Lyle Hess, I thought
Id draw the groups attention to this story, a warning to us all.
Sincerely
Jeff Gilbert
the lyle hess angle seems like a tenuous thread at best.  this norsea guy is a well known crook.  i hope there is no implication of anything similar at sam l morse.  i have never heard of a dissatisfied customer of the bcc.  if anything roger olsen has lost money on me due to his generosity with free advice, phone calls, literature, etc.

Dear Mr Churchill and group,
I apologise if it looked like that was what I meant.
Absolutely not!
The reason I mentioned it is that a friend who loves Lyle Hess's work, wants to have a boat built.
He doesnt have the budget for a BCC and was looking for other Hess boats.
Samuel Morse's building and Lyle Hess's designs are both legendary in Australia.
The Norsea guy was unknown to Brian & myself, our assumtion was "must be OK". The
guy trades heavily off Lyle Hess's name in his website which sucked us in.
Its the fact that he does this that creates the danger, especially to more isolated customers who I understand make up the
primary list of those wronged.
A terrible mistake could have been made.
We had no idea the Norsea story was so widely known.
Ive never heard or spoken a bad word about Samuel Morse, and am pretty miserable that it looked that way
Thank you for giving me the chance to clear this up.
Jeff Gilbert

John, I would certainly agree with you on that. Roger
has really gone out of his way for me, and I’d think
the same holds true for every one else as well.

Long after delivery, and even with his busy schedule,
I
feel I can always pick up the phone whenever I want
and
give him a call. He went out of his way to replace
of some broken parts long after the fact, all on his
own
account. And he even spoke to Yanmar on my behalf when
I had an engine problem. And believe me, it is quite a
show of support to hear such good things about Roger
directly from Yanmar headquarters in the US.

Nice to hear that you are in the water and under sail
in the Chesapeake Bay. If you ever make it north, up
the
Bay, one of my favorite anchor spots is at Sandy Point
on the Great Wicomico; a great place for a swim, and a
great viewing spot for those huge Virginia summer
thunderstorms.

Jeff-

As a BCC owner who completely understands the thought that these gems are
pretty pricey . . . has your pal looked into buying a used BCC? There are
not that many around, but they can be had and for much less than having one
made. Even taking into consideration doing some revamping (to customize to
your own specifications), you (he) would probably come out ahead.

There are also Lyle Hess designs out there in wood, if he really wants to go
whole hog.

There were rumors about a larger (maybe 30 or 32) BCC version in fiberglass -
anyone have more info?

Good luck,

Nica Waters, other half of Jeremy

I agree with you.
Brian is one of those people who seem to want “new” things.
I think hes crazy not to take advantage of the current buyers second hand
market,
as compared to new costs in materials and labour. Whilst I wish all
the best to builders, I’ll show him your em as part of my campain to
get him to avoid the anguish of a new build.
Its strange he is si insistent on “new” when his interest stems from Curlew,
now in its 3rd
century.
On the other hand im reliably informed that a Tasmanian
Wooden Boat building school is currently building
a 30 ft Blue-Water Gaff Cutter for a client. Because the students build it,
it cost $A 24k plus materials, this is the course cost for two students.
We now have tax, 10pct.
The results are, Ive heard, superb, as are local timbers. This is a great
option,
as is the option of being one of the students & working on your own boat.
Whether this costs another 12k I dont know, but it would be wonderful.

I suppose a Pilot Cutters/ Channel Cutters are really Long-Keeled Cutters
as used by Pilots years ago. The terms seem to have taken on a life of
their own.
Thank you
Jeff Gilbert

I second the comments of John and Mark, concerning the helpfulness of Roger Olson. Sam L Morse Co has survived cycles in the economy when other companies have not - a testament to the business sense of Roger and of course the quality of the BCC.

I would like to go further and suggest that another of the big plus points for Sam L Morse is the continuity of shipwrights - Dick McComb and Tommy Whisler have been building BCCs and Falmouth Cutters for 25+ years. You cannot get that sort of continuity of experience, craftmanship and knowledge of the boat and how it works at a production boat-builder or, indeed, at many custom and semi-custom boat yards.

Cheers
