I was looking at air conditioning units in the
West Marine catalog the other day. I must say,
the prices of these units are discouraging.
Does anyone out there have any experience with
air conditioning on a BCC? We are mostly interested
in A/C while we are working and at the dock, so
120 volts would probably be acceptable. 12 volts
would be better though, in case we want cold air at
anchor. The unit would have to be suitable for the
marine environment, so stainless steel or some type
of plastic would be our first choice.
I’ve seen those portable units that mount in the
hatch. But frankly, I could never consider putting
something like this on the deck of a Bristol Channel
Cutter for the entire world to see.
I remember seeing an ad in a defense magazine,
about 5-6 years ago, for a small unit used to cool
military jets, but I can no longer remember the
manufacturer. Ideally, I’d like to find a unit
that I could mount inside the liquor cabinet, so
it would have to be sized to less than 1ftx1ftx2ft
and have enough output for sufficient cooling.
Thanks in advance,
Mark Gearhart

Mark, I’ve had a Cruisaire unit on my BCC for six years now and it has
performed flawlessly. Ours is the Stowaway unit. I’ve got it mounted in an
enclosure I built in the forpeak that sits up against the samson posts. You
do lose some space up there but not as bad as you might think. One of the
nice features of the Cruisaire is the dehumidification cycle you can program
when you are away from the boat. It really keeps the inside of the boat
nice and dry. In Practical Sailor reveiws, Cruisaire is the highest rated
unit. I did not do my installation because I was living overseas at the
time. However, it’s easily within the realm of most do-it-yourself types.
If your still in Houston, give AER Marine in Seabrook a call they are the
Cruisaire distributor in Texas. Feel free to e-mail me if you’d like more
details. Geary Smith - Caylin #94
