bowsprit pulpit attachment

i have pulled my sprit for some work and removed the pulpit to check
for rot around the attachment plates. things seem to be fine,
no rot although the wood is somewhat compressed under the plate. as
long as the thing is off, i am considering altering the attachment
method to prevent any rot and to strengthen it. i had thought about
larger plates attached to the side of the sprit with tapped holes to
accept 1/4"-20 bolts for pulpit attachment. i know at least one
member has replaced their sprit due to rot- any change in attachment
the second time around? anyone know what they are doing at sam morse
now? thanks.

John,

I replaced my sprit due to rot. The bow pulpit was attached with number 12
wood screws and they either came loose and allowed water in which caused rot
or water got in and caused the rot which caused the screws to loosen.

I put teak pads under the feet for the pulpit where it meets the sprit. I
installed two 1/4 x 20 through bolts and two 1/4
lag screws. I bedded everything in dolphanite. (see attached photo’s).

A small tidbit from Woodenboat magazine is to dip the screws in paint before
sending them
home
