Buying a new yacht

Hello All,

Anyone who subscribes to this list is an odvious BCC enthusiast.
However, lets say you were to decide to get a boat between 35 and 50
ft, full or full cut-away keeled, cutter or ketch rigged, medium or
heavy displacement, what would you get? I am aware that the BCC is
considered a 34 footer without overhangs, it’s just that I might be
looking for something larger. Any suggestions?

Thanks . . . .

Paul

Paul,

I love my bcc, but that doesn’t keep me from dreaming. One such day dream
might fill your ticket. An outfit named Covey Island Boatworks has started
producing 40’ LOA and 50’ LOA designs based on the Bristol Channel pilot
cutters. From the photographs and drawings, I’d say these are really
beautiful looking boats.

Jeremy,

Are you saying that the Covey Island Boatworks is building 40 and 50 foot
versions of the BCC or are they building to different plans? How can I
see those plans?

Paul

Paul,

The Covey Island Boatworks’ Westerman designs are by Nigel Irens and Tom
Cunliffe, not Lyle Hess. All of these boats have common ancestors though, and
to my eye share a similar character.

I would definitely check out the range Pacific Seacrafts. Bill Crealock
has done a great job of integrating new and old in his designs. They
seem solid and well thought out. They also have a great rep.

Another Lyle Hess design that you may like is the Itchen Ferry. At 34’,
it is larger than the BCC and retains the same character and sea
worthiness of the BCC. You can see some pictures of her at

During a recent visit to the Sam L. Morse Co. I noted a specification
sheet for the Hess 32. Roger is thinking about the possibility of
building this but I think he is strongly leaning against it. It is
currently produced in South Africa.
Although not a Hess design, a larger boat that is tempting and built in
the U.S., and I know that one is half built and looking for an owner, is
Nereia, a 36’ ketch built by Middleton Marine.
