Cetol

I’m considering using a prooduct called Cetol by Sikkens. Has anybody had an
experience with this? Any suggestions?

I used Cetol when I first had Godspeed built.
Unfortunately, Cetol did not protect my mahagony
at all. I eventually stripped the wood bare and
applied Schooner Varnish. The boat now has a
good waterproof finish, and is a natural mahagony
color, not Cetol orange.

There is an earlier thread on Cetol in this
newsgroup that you may want to review.

I have had it on most of my exterior teak on Crystal Swan II. It makes the
wood look a little like
plastic, I did not like that so I am removing it.

David and Susan,
We have had great luck with Cetol both on our mahogany bulwarks and the
teak hatches. Reapplication about every 6 month is easy after the initial
three coat application.

It’s good stuff, but it is not transparent. you need as least three coats
for decent protection and anymore than three coats starts to make the bright
work look like a burnt orange paint job. At least that’s my impression. I
know others that love or hate it. I personally used it once several years
ago and now stick "more traditional methods.

Hi David,
Used Sikkens Cetol, (still do) on a Norwegian pilot cutter I rebuilt that
had teak and mahog everywhere. The trick is in the prep. Insure that
everything is cleaned, sanded, cleaned again and wiped with acetone or a
wax/wood oil remover. You’ll need to apply 3 initial coats. DO NOT use the
clear overcoat- that stuff peels and cracks like varnish. Have used Cetol
for years and all it requires is a maint. coat once a year. They now manu. a
“lite” which moves away from the “orange” color and I believe I will go to
that when and if I strip my wood. The move here in the northeast is towards
this product and everyone I know who has used it loves it. Good luck.
