Fleming Wind Vanes

I am looking for any BCC28 owners who have experience with the
Fleming Wind Vane. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Tom Harrer

We have had correspondence with an owner of a Willard 8 Ton who has a
Fleming wind vane. They are very enthusiastic about it.
We are in the process of buying a BCC. Our first choice of wind vane is the
Cape Horn. We had a Cape Horn on our custom built Flicka used it all the
time. One of the things we like about the Cape Horn is the installation is
very clean. If anyone is interested in a more detailed description of the
Cape Horn, we’ll be happy to answer any questions.

The Westsail owners association in the Chesapeake put together a group order
from Cape Horn at last years Annapolis Boat Show. They were able to get a
group discount by doing so. Is there any interest here for doing something
similar?

We will be buying a windvane within the next several months.

Dear Lenora:
Thanks ever so much…as if my options weren’t confusing enough! Since
your reply, I have taken a closer look at the Cape Horn and agree that the
installation is tidier…only concern at the moment is Roger’s suggestion
that it is overly sensative in light air. Would appreciate any experience
you have had with yours in that regard.

My boat will not be done until next spring (summer?..fall?) but would
like to have the self-steerer decided fairly soon in case the installation
requires anything through the transom. I would be very interested in
participating in a group order after a little more research on both the
Fleming and the Cape Horn.

Please keep in touch.

just to muddy the water, consider a home made pardey style vane. i put mine
together for $600-700. i am not thru fiddling with it yet, but am generally
satisfied with it.

  1. Regarding light air sailing with the Cape Horn:
We were consistently able to sail in light air with the Cape Horn. As with
any wind vane, the key is to have the boat balanced and sails well trimmed.
We could sail with the wind vane in 5 knots of wind with our Flicka here on
the Chesapeake (as long as there was not a lot of powerboat chop).

  2. Regarding mounting on the bumpkin. Our Flicka had a bumpkin and the
mounting was very clean. For some pictures, look at the following site.
Look for windvane in the index table. http://home.att.net/~africanmoon/
