I’m looking to purchase a used free hand wind vane 
I’m also curious how other FC sailors are steering by the wind .
For now at least, with old sails having transferred their camber aft, I lash the tiller to windward, slacken the main and tighten forward sails when close hauled or beam reach just enough to avoid going into irons. I ask my first mate to take the helm if I need a quick nap while going downwind, or heave to for a while. New sails from www.schurrsails.com arriving next week and she may not be so forgiving. However, I’ve plans to install a simple system described here, having taken some measurements on where to place the vane pivot:
