I am Lee Gunter, owner of New World, an Itchen Ferry 32 which
circumnavigated 97-2000. I am looking for other owners to discuss types of
auxillary power and Freehand steering systems. BCC owners welcome to reply.
My adventures were posted on www.houstonchronicle.com/sail for those

Hello-
While others may prefer other makes of auxiliary power or even no
power, I am very happy with my Yanmar. I do not know of any
dissatisfied owners. My boats former engine was a Volvo and the
previous owner (an engineer) chose a Yanmar to repower.
My former boat was a Cape Dory. Many of the older boats in the
owner’s club had Volvo engines. Many complaints about parts
availability and cost. I am sure Rod will give an unbiased review of
his Saab.
I have a homemade version of the Freehand vane. While it took a
good amount of tweaking to get it just right, I am very happy with it
and feel that it has some significant advantages over the
alternatives. I can forward some pics and dimensions to you if
interested.

Hi,

What horsepower is your Yanmar? I have theorized that
for heavy displacement boats, 1.5 hp/ft is just right.
I have a Volvo Penta 2003 and had minimal trouble
with it and excellent fuel consumption, but at 27 hp
it was too small for the third wave. I believe 45-50
hp would be just about perfect.

Out there in the big blue Yanmar was preferred for
inboard and Yamaha for outboards.

I have the 3GM30F which is 27 horsepower, which seems to have
plenty of power- goes close to hull speed and plenty of power to get
thru big head seas- took me out the inlet at West Palm Beach last
year in an onshore swell against ebb tide situation-waves over the
bow put water in the cockpit. Gets about .6 gph at 5 1/2 knots. The
Volvo aboard before was an 18 hp.
What is your boat’s displacement? I believe that many people
prefer to think in terms of horsepower per ton rather than length.

Hi John,

New World displaced 28,800 when fully loaded in NZ.
Net tons, 12. I also am thinking of the Yanmar:
3JH3GE which is 40 h.p. But also wouldn’t be limited
to just that unless the available space prevents a
bigger motor. All told, I put 3,300 hours on the
engine. Any thoughts?

I have a Volvo MD7B, which is 18 hp. It is not enough power to get the BCC
to hull speed, and is particularly underpowered when dealing with the many
currents in the Pacific Northwest. My Volvo is raw water cooled and is now
19 years old. I plan to replace it with a Yanmar 27 once it packs it in,
but so far, it’s still going strong.

Hi John - Saw your comment regarding the 27hp Yanmar you have. Ariel
also came with a Volvo 18hp – would appreciate your comparison.
