Hull # 17 Fox Fire

Currently have Hull # 17 under contract. Does anyone in BccLand have
any historical info or previous owner contact info on her? Love to
hear from you!

You have Fox Fire 'under contract' but don't know the name of the owner? And I would think that owner would know who he bought it from. Don't understand.

And while I'm befuddled, someone straighten me out why some boats listed on the owners register have hull numbers that are out of sequence with the dates listed as 'year'.  I thought the date built was considered to be when the keel was layed; in this case, when the fiberglas hull was layed up. The only wayt I can figure the confusion is that some boats are listed as dating form when the boat was launched after being 'owner' finished.

Stan and the BCC group.  I would like to explain the HIN (Hull Identification Number).  It is required by the Coast Guard that any builder who manufactures pleasure craft meet certain standards.  The Coast Guard Issues the builder a three letter code that must proceed the other numbers.  There are a total of 12 letters and numbers.  I will explain them at end of this message.
The problem occurs when the number or letter doesn't read clearly.  There were some minor errors made with the month on some of the older boats but they were minor, only the month the boat was built.
On older boats the HIN was located just above the boot top on the starboard side. However, some were placed on the port side.  Later, in the 80's the Coast Guard required the HIN be above the waterline so it was moved to the top of the transom port or starboard side.
A Canadian built boat has its own HIN and it must have a "V" in the first three letters.  Unfortunately, many of the Canadian built boats did not have any HIN.  This was only one of many reasons the SLM Co. discontinued their agreement with the Canadian builder.
Now for the SLM Co. HIN:  Let me use an example:  SFJBC120F999
John, you were mostly correct but I suspect the "0" might be something else.  Anyway:
SFJ: This is the Coast Guard Code for the SLM Co.
BC: is the make (Bristol Channel Cutter)  if it has FC it is a Falmouth Cutter, CH is a Cherub, etc.
120:  There are three digits to indicate the hull number.  The hull number must be in sequence that the hull was laid up.  It may have nothing to do when it was launched.  The HIN is placed in the mold during lay-up.  There have been a few situations in the past where Crystaliner forgot and it had to be added later, but that could not change the HIN.
F:  Should be a letter that indicates the month of the lay-up.  This is where there is some confusion because this used to be a number between 1-12.  This caused confusion so the CG changed it to a letter.
9: This next number indicates the model year.  The CG expects the models to change in at least every 9 years.  So the number is the last digit of the model year.  Example:  if a boat was laid up in 85 and the model has not changed it will have a 5 as the model year.  Since BCC's do not have any major changes in models, this number usually will correspond to the year it was laid up.
99:  The last two digits is the year the boat way laid-up.
If anyone has difficulty reading or understanding their HIN, call Sumio at the SLM Co.  He has files on all the boats and can give you any information you may want.....except what the boat sold for to the original owner.
