Lifeline stanchions

Any suggestions on what bedding compound to use on lifeline stanchion bases?

Douglas - I saw a picture of your stanchions circa August 25, 2012. It appears like there is some type of pad under the base…is this butly tape?

After using the typical 3M sealants, I am now using butyl tape and love it! So much easier to work with, totally effective and, apparently, lasts forever!

Hi Gary,

Did you countersink the bulwark before you mounted the stanchions so the butyl could form a gasket in the countersink?

I used butyl in a caulking tube for my stanchion bases. I use that stuff all over now. My primary bedding compound. Have used the tape, but it keeps mushing out over time, so I have to go back and clean it up 2 or 3 times. It does seal well.

Did you countersink the wood on your bulwarks so a butyl o-ring could form when you tightened down your stanchions?

Yes, doesn’t take much of a countersink to be effective.

I did not countersink mine, but it appears to be effective without the countersink. I agree with seacap that butyl tape does ooze out over time, but it is very easy to clean up (trim carefully with an Exacto knife and use a small clump of butyl tape, which will easily pull the excess away) and suggests to me that there is more than enough to create a seal.

I decided to countersink everything that’s going to be bedded in butyl (see attached photo). After countersinking I applied a two part clear epoxy with a trimmed acid brush.

Good idea! From now on I will also countersink slightly - that must result in a superior seal!

Ahoy Traveler , if you saw my brnz bulwark stanchion bases , those black color delrin plastic pads under them are needed to adjust the brnz base to the bulwarks angles and heights .

I did use 3M 5200 for the bedding compound , but did as you , champhor the bolt holes and cut-in annular grooves near the perimeter , both top and bottom , on the Delrin blocks .
