Lyle Hess Remembrance Rendezvous 2004

Aloha,
?
We just got interviewed by a great writer who is going to publish a profile of Lyle Hess in the May issue of Good Old Boat Magazine, our magazine of choice if we had only one.
?
We are thinking a lot about Lyle. We also visited with Lin and Larry at the Atlantic City Boat Show and talked about Lyle. We want to have a chance to remember a truly great man who few of us know much about. We’d like to make a big reunion for all the people around who own a Lyle Hess design vessel.
?
What if we all gather either in September or perhaps better, at Boat Show in October. We would?invite Lin and Larry to come and inspect your boats. We can have Bob Perry show up…did you know he has?a 40-foot BCC on the boards for anyone interested in moving up to the bigger perfect boat. Or maybe Sumio will raffle off a free BCC?
?
By my count, we have six BCCs on the Bay, three Nor’Sea, and a few in New England whose owners could at least show up by land.
BCCs…Sirius, Iduna, Aloha, Calypso, Mimi (with a new owner), Itchen, McNab, And at least three Nor’Sea…maybe four or five.
?
Let’s get to know Lyle Hess. He was probably the move forward thinking of the designers of his time and it all works in this time. Hey…just coming to Annapolis at Boat Show is cool and how great is it to hook up with everyone at the same time.
?
So…who among you are inspired about this idea?
?

a quote from Lyle
"How different it must be, thought Lyle, “to have a huge yacht with a paid crew and plenty of room.” Just at that moment one of the guests, great in both years and in the wisdom of the sea, looked down and whispered, “God, boys, how we wish we were you.” By Chuck Malseed Reprint of Cruising World Feb 1977
There really is something special about having a boat you can sail anywhere you want to go, if by yourself or with your?partner.??Things change, but not that much. I think that people are recognizing the value of these amazing creations. Lyle was the architect. Let’s give him credit and honor him.

While on the subject of Lyle, does anyone know what influenced him to design the Fatty Knees Dinghy.
Seems that I read a magazine article some long time ago, that said, Lyle was in Morro Bay, California, when the idea came to him. Is anyone out there that could shed some more light on this ?

Aloha!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

It was a wonderful gathering of wonderful people and great Lyle Hess boats!
I’m so happy that everyone showed up. Seeing all the Montgomerys, the
NorSeas, and BCCs there was so very cool.

It really was a tribute to a great man who loved sailing and people. Lyle is
remembered for his generosity of spirit that touched the lives of many
people and through his boats, he surely has touched ours.

Bernie did give a great speech about the bonds that bring all of us together
and shared love and appreciation we have for the sea, for adventure, and for
great, great boats. Rod took lots of great shots as our photographer! Hope
to see those soon. Bob Eeg made it from California to great his fleet of
Montgomerys and NorSeas. Thank you Bob!

So many people invested the time and effort to show up and make it happen.
Thank you ALL! I’ll have to post the list of people who made it from far and
wide. It was really, really great. Lots of sharing ideas and showing off
inventions. Vera’s was delightful! And, Vera is going strong.

Everyone said “Let’s do it again!” Maybe a Spring date to get you all going
early. Or make plans to sail to Bermuda with “Aloha” BCC95.

We’d love to see Lyle’s designs gracing St Georges Harbour next June 25th
ish!

Start planning on sailing!
