Mast Paint

Hi John Churchill, I was curious to see how your mast paint is
holding up. Last May, you had a posting about using plain old
Benjamin Moore enamal on the mast.

Godspeed’s boom started spotting within the first year after
purchase, so eventually I’ll have to do something. I’m not sure
it would be wise to repeat the factory coating.

I was wondering… Has your Benjamin Moore paint held up over the
last year? If so, exactly which enamal did you use? I noticed that
they have several types of enamal, for both house and industrial
applications.

Thanks,
Mark Gearhart

mark-
it is now almost two years since i painted the mast. generally it
has held up well. it has chipped a bit in places, like where the
reefing rings hit the mast when i am broad reaching. perhaps a
harder paint, like LPU, would not have chipped, but touch up with the
enamel is a cinch. it has faded some on the upper surface of the
spreaders, but that only bothers me when i climb the mast. maybe i
will paint the top surface with a high quality marine white enamel
next time. the other parts, since they are not exposed so directly
to the sun, do not seem to be faded. i used just a standard high
gloss oil based enamel. i am up in Fargo, ND for a month
replenishing the kitty, and i can check the exact type of paint and
the color # and mix for you upon my return. i could even send a
paint chip sample if you are interested. opening the can will give
me a good excuse to touch up those spots (although i think i am going
to glue a bit of leather to the mast there as well)

OK, thanks John. Sounds like the simple paint method
works well. Yes, If you can get the exact paint info,
I’d sure appreciate it. For now, I’m just going to do
my boom, which has chipped badly.

Thanks,
Mark
