Operating Manual??

Have you written an Operating Manual for your BCC?

After a year of enjoying BCC116, I’ve decided to write an operating
manual. I figure that it would add value if/when it comes time to
sell and act as an aide-memoire.

Writing an operating manual takes time to get the detail right. I’m
not interested in reinventing the wheel, so I’d be v glad to hear if
you have already done some part of the job. Of course, equipment and
gear differs on our boats.

Cheers

Showering

  1. Check that the Main Switch is turned On
  2. Heat water (if desired). The Isotemp 0221R water heater, in the
lazarette on the port side, heats and stores 22 litres of hot water.
Hot water can be made in two ways, by:
    a. exchanging heat from the engine cooling water. The water
temperature drops by about 0.5°C an hour after running the engine.
    b. using AC electricity to heat the water. The Isotemp water heater
has a 750 Watt heating coil (ie it draws > 3 amps, so it is
impractical for long showers unless using shore power).
    i) Flip the AC Inverter switch on
ii) Flip the Water Heater switch on
  3. Install shower curtain, using the press studs
  4. Flip on the pressure water switch at main switchboard. Water
pressure is provided by a Flojet Quad II diaphragm 4405-143 pump,
mounted in the locker under the settee. The pump automatically
maintains a pressure of 2.4 bar (35 psi) and can deliver < 12.5
    litres/min (3.3 US gals/min), drawing > 3.9 amps, from the freshwater
tank (151 litres or 40 US gals) under the cabin sole.
  5. Flip on the sump pump switch at the main switchboard to arm the
shower drain pump. The drain pump can then be operated using the dark
red rocker switch, mounted between cupboard doors. The Flojet Quad II
diaphragm 4105-143 pump, mounted in the bilge just forward of the
    mast, can extract < 12.5 litres/min (3.3 US gal/min) and draws > 3.6
amps. It’s a diaphragm pump, so it is self-priming and can run dry
    without damage.
  6. Shower

After use:

  1. Turn off AC to the water heater (if used): first the Water Heater
    switch and second the Inverter
  2. Flip off the pressure water switch
  3. Flip off the shower sump pump rocker switch when the sump is dry.
Flip off the sump pump switch
  4. Sponge dry and stow the shower curtain

Draining the Bilges
Forepeak
Drain the shower sump by:

  1. Check that the Main Switch is turned On
  2. Flip on the sump pump switch, to arm the shower drain pump (main
    switchboard)
  3. Flip on the dark red rocker switch (port side, between cupboard
doors). The Flojet Quad II diaphragm 4105-143 pump, mounted under the
cabin sole just forward of the mast, can extract 12.5 litres/min (3.3
US gal/min) and draws > 3.6 amps. It’s a diaphragm pump, so it is
self-priming and can run dry without damage.
  4. After use, flip off the rocker switch and the sump pump switch.

Cabin
The cabin bilges (accessible via inspection plates set into the cabin
sole around the mast and beside the chart table) drain into the
Engine bilge.

Engine
The engine bilge has a Rule 2000 submersible pump operated by an
automatic switch. The switch should be left flipped to Auto. A
Henderson Mark V manual bilge pump is located at the stern to port,
with its handle kept in the port bag for the mainsheet.

Drain the engine bilge, on command, in two ways:

  1. Electrically
    a. Check that the Main Switch is turned On
    b. Flip the upper bilge switch to Manual and hold it there (it’s
spring loaded and will return to Off). The Rule 2000 pump can extract
    up to 124 litres/min (33 US gal/min) and draws 8.4 amps. It’s an
impeller pump, so it should not be run dry to avoid impeller damage.
    c. After use, flip the bilge pump switch back to Auto.
  2. Manually
    a. Find the pump handle (metal with black plastic hand piece) in the
    portside mainsheet bag
    b. Flip open the cover of the Henderson Mk V pump and insert the
    handle
    c. Work the pump with full strokes from fore to aft. The Henderson
Mark V pump can extract up to 60 litres/min (16 US gal/min) and can
    run dry without damage.
    d. After use, stow the handle in the portside mainsheet bag and close
the cover of the Henderson pump.
    Lazarette
    Drain the Lazarette bilge by:
  3. Check that the Main Switch is turned On
  4. Flip on the lower bilge pump switch. The Rule 24 pump can extract
    up to 23 litres/min (6 US gal/min) and draws 2.1 amps. It’s an
impeller pump, so it should not be run dry to avoid impeller damage.
  5. After use, flip off the bilge pump switch.

the previous owner of my boat gave me a thick notebook with all the
literature from all the various equipment, etc in it. i have still
had to call him on occasion to find out about certain little bits
such as some unusual valves in the fresh water system. i do not
think an owner’s manual as such is needed to go over basic systems as
most things are self explanatory and i like to believe that most BCC
owner’s are fairly knowledgeable about boat stuff.
