HI DOES ANY OUT THERE HAPPEN TO KNOW WHAT THE COST IS TO TAKE A BCC
THROUGH THE PANAMA CANAL OR WHERE I FIND OUT THANKS FRANK.
I paid $38 in 1981. Now I hear of figures of $150 with rumors that
the Zone will increase pleasure boat fees to $3,500 because of the
recent tub boat crushing two sailboats.
Search engine the Panama Canal for the latest info.

It is my understanding that the current policy is to discourage recreational
traffic, and those prices will continue to rise.

according to info from march 2001 thru the SSCA, fees for <50’ boat
are $500 US plus a refundable $800 deposit to cover all the damage a
small boat might cause. visa only is card accepted. an agent
will cost about $500 more. need 4 125’ lines (5/8" min i think),
available for rent for $15 each, as well as linehandlers. locals
charge $50/day, plus meals/sleep aboard if 2 day transit, plus return
fare. fenders(plastic covered tires) are $3-4 each. some recommend
going thru as linehandler for someone else first to reconnoiter
the route. plan on 5 day wait to transit in feb, 8 in march. mooring
in balboa $22/night. no slips in colon.
i saw a very good pamphlet on the canal at armchair sailor in
newport recently for $15 or so, full of good advice, photos and red
warnings. a little overpriced, but probably worth buying if you are
going to go for certain. i can try to fax this ssca info if you need
it.
