RE: Construction Manuel

I didn’t know such a manual existed. Although my BCC is factory finished
(hull #64), I also would be interested in obtaining a copy.

I’m looking for a copy of the original contruction manuel on the BCC
given to bareboat builders by Morse…Sumio states he no longer has
access to any copies, as barehulls are no longer being bought from Morse.

I have a bare hull from the Canadian mold…the manuel would be very
useful, to say the least. I be happy to handle any expenses relating
to obtaining a copy.

Thanks!

I have hull #22. When I bought the bare hull and deck in '77, there
was no manual or even ‘patterns’ so far as I know. There was an
interior layout plan as designed by Lyle Hess, but that was all.

You might take a look at a copy of Frenk Mate’s book “From a Bare
Hull” for some pointers on how to go about laying out an interior,
glassing in half bulkheads, plumbing, etc.

Because we knew we were not going with the standard interior and the
inside of a bare 28 foot ‘hole’ can be intimidating, we used
cardboard mock-ups duct taped in place to gain some perspective on
dimentions of bunks, stove, icebox, etc.

If a construction manual ever existed I’ve never heard of it.

I am sending this message via the BCC group so that all the BCC owners
understand the importance of what I am attempting to convey. This could
effect the value of ALL existing legally built Bristol Channel Cutters

Tom,

I am sorry to have to inform you that your hull and deck are illegally
built.

Mr. Roger Olson, the previous owner of the Sam L. Morse Companytold me he
once told you that the Sam L. Morse Company has the exclusive rights to
build the Bristol Channel Cutter and no one else, anywhere in the world can
build it. The mold you used to build your boat in Canada was originally
used to produce the BCC in Canada as long as there was an active agreement
between the Sam L. Morse Company and the Canadian builder. When the
agreement was cancelled so was the rights for the mold to be used to produce
another hull.

I hope you understand that we must protect the reputable name of the Bristol
Channel Cutter. If one illegal boat is built that is not up to the
standards of the original Canadian built boats or the Sam L. Morse boats, it
will effect the value of all existing Bristol Channel Cutters. This is the
reason we discontinued selling bare hulls and will only sell a boats
completed or semi-complete, where it has our structural standard installed.

Legal action may be taken if you continue to purse building this boat and
call it a Bristol Channel Cutter. I am sure that you do not want to engage
legal representation, nor do we but to protect the Bristol Channel Cutter
name we will go to any length, no mattter the cost.

I do have a simple solution for you that will not cost you a cent. I
strongly recommend you contact me at (949) 645-1843…if I am not available,
please leave your name and telephone number on the voice message.

Hi John,

It has come to my attention since I made the manual available that bootleg
copies of the BCC hull are being made using the old Canadian version mold.
The fact is that this practice threatens the  viability of Sam L. Morse
company if it continues due to potentially sub-standard boats being
produced.

To guard against this I am requiring the hull number of your BCC to release
the manual. I also feel that this manual, inadquate though it may be, should
be freely available to all BCC owners to assist them in repair of their
boats. The bootleg hull buyers are just going to have to wing it.

I am sure you understand.

I have one of the rouge BCCs, could someone please tell me what the
difference is between the Sam L. Morse mold & the Canadian version?

Sumio told me about the issue with the bulk heads and the history/trouble
with the Canadian builder, is there anything else I should watch out for?

Have any of my fellow Canadian BCC owners found any problems/issues with
their BCCs?

Rick:

We have Canadian Hull #14.  The boat was built by Channel Cutter Yachts, as was yours, based on hull number.  IDUNA was owner finished to a very high standard by Peter Thinnus.  Other SLM BCC's owners who have been aboard IDUNA have commented on the quality of joinery work.  The interior is all wood - Alaskan yellow cedar and teak.  IDUNA does not have a hull number, whether that was done to avoid paying royalties or was not required in Canada, I do not know.  Many boats built in the USA before 1980 did not have a hull number.  Our first boat, Blue Moon, did not have a hull number.

I believe the alleged rogue hull(s) refers to another party after Channel Cutter Yachts closed its door.  I thought SML contacted this party recently and put a stop to the practice.  Perhaps Roger or Sumio would care to comment on this matter.

I am confused why the new Channel Cutter Yachts company is building the Channel Cutter 34.  In my opinion, the logical company to build the new boat is SLM, based on their good working relationship with the late Lyle Hess.  I find it difficult to understand why the "Lyle Hess Group" sold the rights to the Canadian company, considering the history of working relationships between SML and the late Lyle Hess and the old Channel Cutter Yachts company.  This was a disappointment for me.  Again, perhaps, Roger of Sumio could comment on this matter.

Thank you Roger for the clarification.

Rod,

I hope Sumio does not mind but I will respond to your comments.  I am in regular contact with Sumio so I know what is happening.

The problem with the BCC hull in Canada has not been resolved and really don't know how to do it right now.  Really do not want to go to the expense of lawyers.....but...this may be what is required.

The Sam L. Morse Co. wanted to buy the 34 like you cannot believe!  Lyle Hess had sold the rights to the same person who originally built the Canadian BCC.  He took the rights and drawings with him to South Africa where he began to build a few boats.  He wanted to sell the tooling to SLM Co. but the cost for the rights and shipping made it only available to someone with money.  There was no choice....no money....

I know that Channel Cutter Yachts are in new hands and I wish them the best with the 34.  A lot of boat for 34 feet.

Hope this answers questions.

Roger

Hi Don, My name is Eric Pomber and I am finishing hull number 29 from a bare hull. I went out and spent a few days with Sumio and Tommy at the yard and came away with lots of valuable information. I have all of the exterior wood work done and most of the interior pre-fabed and in the boat but not glassed in. I saved this your email about the construction manual and then had trouble with my yahoo account so I never got around to asking you for a copy of it. If you still have it and could forward it to me I would really appreciate it. You can never have to much information as problems are lurking around every corner. I am faithfully sticking to the current standard layout from the blue prints I got from Sumio.
Sincerely Eric Pomber

Hi Stan, To the best of my knowledge I am the third owner of #29. The original owner was from Maine and then it was sold to a guy from Michigan. When I found the boat it had the opening ports installed and a nice coat of paint on the tiller. The owner from Maine had a hollow spruce mast' boom, and bowsprit made to the original plans. It came with 5 brand new sails,Main, 100% jib, staysail, working jib, and spinnaker. All were made by Bhondel from Main. The boat spent it's life on a farm until I got it. The gelcoat is chalky and the floor of the cockpit had a crack, other than that it was fine. Fortunately the first owners never touched the deck so when I checked every square inch with a moisture meter it was dry as a bone. This fall I finished the bulwarks, covering boards, and rub rails. Last summer I roughed in the interior which is screwed in place with spacers and is ready to be glassed in place over the Christmas holiday. When I can get some digital photos I'll pas them along. Thanks for the info on the manual and yes I am going to have a brand new old boat #29 1977 SLM BCC. Eric Pomber
