Re-filling Propane Tanks

Ahoy All , I need to re-fill my onboard aluminium horizontal propane tanks, but they are out of “requalification”, and my budget doesn’t allow the purchase of new tanks at this time.

Any ideas of how to accomplish this refill task ?

When in SE Asia , I would be able to decant the propane from a filled rental cylinder , into my tanks.

The new OPD (over fill prevention device) valves , with the full flow prevention system , does not allow me to decant from the rental tanks here.

An internet search mentions that the aluminium horizontal fork lift tanks, don’t come with the “OPD” or full flow blocking system , so where can I find one of these as a rental 10 gallon tank ?

I also use onboard the UK Primus 14 oz re-fillable propane cylinders, and I need the free flow from a full tank to fill these , as well .

BTW , in Japan it is near impossible without the “long green” , to get propane on our boats . In Japan , Nick , advises me to purchase one of those butane single burner camp cook stoves, and just put it on top of my existing “Mariner” stove and use that for cooking . We had to do that , as do many Japan boat owners .

Howdy,

I believe you’re in the NW these days?

I had the same problem and had mine updated and certified at Sure Marine here in Seattle. I don’t remember the exact price but it was incredibly reasonable, somewhere around $50 for two tanks.

Hope that helps.

Ben

Ahoy Ben , That’s a great tip and very helpful , I will contact Sure Marine , today !

Yes , located in two PNW places , boat in P T , and weekly in Federal Way .

Doug,
Sure Marine, here in Ballard, is THE marine stove store in Seattle. If you visit them, maybe we could get together for a cup? We live in Ballard and Shaula is in nearby Shilshole marina. Also Fisheries Supply, not far away, is THE marine store in Seattle, if West Marine doesn’t suit.
Dan

Hi Dan , Sure Marine replies :

Hello Douglas

I am sorry to say your tanks can’t be updated.
Horizontal dot tanks have a extra fitting in the tank for the fill only opd.
Please view our web page at www.suremarineservice.com
For a replacement.

Ouch ! I wonder if my ungualified propane tanks void my insurance , of if a C G on the water inspection would discover this problem ???

So far the only solution , other than purchasing new tanks, would be to purchase a new steel fork lift LPG tank , because it doesn’t have that free flow safeguard , and decant the gas into my existing onboard tanks .

I will send you a Private Message about a cuppa .

Dan and I were talking the other day about putting together a NW BCC sail and meet up sometime. Might be time to start putting that in motion, especially now that I am getting closer with my engine being refinished.

I’d love to join ya’ll for a cup of tea as well if you’re accepting applications!

Ben

Ok Ben , You Are In , we will keep you posted !!!

Ahoy Ben , check your “Private Messages”, for a cuppa , date today !
