Re: Possible BCC Alternatives

gerald

look at the baba 30’s…similar to the bcc with beautiful lines. Rich at the
annapolis sailyard , Inc. Has a few for sale. steve hoffman.

I would appreciate input on slightly larger
alternative boats to the BCC that retain the
practicality, beauty, and sailing abilities associated
with the BCC. While I have not ruled out a BCC, I
would like to at least consider alternative boats that
are slightly larger in size, perhaps in the 32 foot
LOA area. Some possible alternatives include the 31
foot Cape George Cutter, some early and smaller Morris
Yacht boats designed by Chuck Paine, and some 60s and
70s designs. I am looking for a FRP boat that can
safely and comfortably handle blue water sailing as
well as spending considerable time in her home port of
Annapolis.

I’m doing the same sort of shopping thing - I want to buy a boat next year
(still saving money)
and have identified the following possible candidates in addition to the
BCC:

Westsail 32 http://www.westsail.org/
Baba 30 http://www.mneta.org/~dennisv/baba/about.htm
Hans Christian 33T http://www.hanschristianyachts.com/

Still dreaming, but now with a budget …

Other alternatives include the Hans Christians, 35’ and up, as well
as Valiant Yachts, and Pacific Seacraft. It all depends on what your
priorities are, as well as the depth of your pockets! If you REALLY
like the hull shape of the BCC, then I suggest you talk to Paul
Gartside…check out his website at www.gartsideboats.com He builds
a 30’ gaff cutter that might fill your bill. It is loosely based on
a Falmouth Workboat, but with finer lines. While there are some big
Itchen Ferries around, they are pretty slow (if very comfortable),
and draw about 6-7’ in the 30’ hull-length range. Martin Heard of
Tregatreath Cornwall also makes a 35’ Falmouth Quay Punt in
fibreglass that is mighty roomy, and a lot faster, especially in the
gaff-cutter version. As well, he makes a 42’ St Malo pilot cutter in
GRP that is a real joy to behold. While he does not have his own
website (he HATES computers!), he may be reached through the Gaffers
& Luggers Association website, or via the Association President,
Clive Ffitch at ffitch@clara.co.uk .

Thank you for all the thoughtful and informative
responses to my original request for suggestions re
possible slightly larger BCC alternatives. I was
familiar with most of the suggested boats, but some
new options have also been placed on my list. The
quality of the responses clearly indicates that many
others have given been challenged by this very issue.
Many of the suggested alternatives are too large for
my needs and also far too expensive, particularly if
one were to purchase the boat new. Clearly, a market
exists for a well built, responsive, and reasonably
priced boat in the 30 to 35 foot range that can safely
and comfortably handle blue water sailing. It would
be wonderful if the BCC were just ever so slightly
larger, but that too entails trade-offs involving cost
and maintenance that must be considered.

I had the great pleasure of meeting and speaking with
Larry and Lin Pardey at the recently completed U.S.
Sailboat Show in Annapolis. They were at the show
in conjunction with the reunion of Serrafyn and
Taleisin. It was interesting to note what an enormous
difference exists between the two boats, particularly
re interior space. As everyone here knows, Serrafyn
is slightly smaller than the BCC, Taleisin is slightly
larger. Perhaps we should all hope for a FRP version
of Taleisin, but of course cost would be a major
issue.

Well, half the pleasure is in the hunt, and the search
for the right boat is indeed a pleasurable challenge.

Maybe I’ve been deluding myself these last few years, but I own a boat I’ve
considered a “pocket BCC”. Its called a Dockrell 27, a full keel cutter made
in the U.K. Nothing fancy, but rock solid and affordable. In England its also
called the Hurley 27. Write for details.

You should speak with Ashly Butler. He is the captian and owner of Ziska, a
1903 Morcambe Bay Prawner that he rebuilt. He is staying in Spa Creek
anchorage above the bridge. He is good friends with Lin and Larry and they
have all mentioned Lyle Hess’s 32’ Channell Cutter. The WORD WIDE rights
have been sold but the owner has failed to produce any boats to the design.

As for Seraffyn, I can say with out a doubt that she has more storage than
my 27’ PSC Orion. But before you chuck your engine overboard and add that
dresser you have to realize that sculling is a skill. One that takes a lot
of practice. Wane and Norma are still on the learning curve as this is
thier first cruise. They have spent the last 3 years involved in an
extensive refit to bring her back to the condition that the Pardy’s keept
her in. (By the way their last name is Tillet.) I guess Tiller would have
been too cute!

If you would like to pick Ash’s brain I’m certain you could bribe him with
Miller Lite (long neck). I’ve seen it done before!
