Rudder Trouble

Hi all,

Scott and Dorthy made light of the rudder trouble. I hope you will
all go and check to see that you either have the prescribed teak
block between your pintles and grudeons or at least you have a bolt
through both the upper and lower.

When we saw Icthen’s rudder calming floating besider her on a crispy
morning at the mooring, we could only say “thank god it didn’t happen
yesterday”. Oh my…

Please do pass on the news. Most of us think that it could not happen
to our BCC!

Scott and Dorthy do get the “good sport” award for fearlessness in
the sight of “what could have happened”.

Seriously,

Check them rudders. Aloha has hers anchored tom and bottom.

Aloha
Kate

What, specifically are we talking about? I guess I missed the previous discussion on this topic.

Hi All,

Just as a matter of interest, when I bought ‘Bristol Cream’(Vancouver boat)
there was an upside-down pintle & gudgeon installed about 2/3rds up the
rudder. Obviously it was there to forestall the problems you’all are
discussing.

Hi Denis,

Thanks for your advice. It seems that others have found and solved the
problem or the rudder trouble.

When Bernie said to me “Itchen’s rudder seems to be floating beside her”. I
said, “No. that can’t be possible.” Yet it was.

Thank you for stepping up to the plate. I don’t want to see any BCC
rudderless! We all know where we are bound.

Let’s all just make sure that our BCC’s have rudders that can not float
away.

…I know there was a good reason for the “weak link” but I can’t stand the
thought of my rudder floating away.

Check your rudder…please.

Steve,
Kate was referring to my earlier post about Itchen’s rudder floating
up and off its gudgeons a couple weeks ago. Fortunately this
happened while on a mooring and not a couple of nights earlier when
we were bringing her down the Jersey coast in a brisk 20 - 30 knot
easterly. From subsequent conversations with Sumio and other owners
and some poking around in the archives, I surmise that this is only
a potential problem with earlier production BCC’s having the foam-
cored Foss rudders, which are light enough to float.

These rudders are kept from floating up and away by a bolt and
washer in one or more gudgeons. Some, like Itchen (Hull # 73), have
only one pintle with the bolt; others like Kate’s Aloha have bolts
in two pintles. Sumio suggested fitting a block below the gudgeon
to prevent the bolt backing out, and I’ve seen a similar suggestion
in a note from Roger Olson, and I think this is important advice.

Two pintle bolts do give a lot more security than one, and after our
close call I would never again consider going offshore in boat with
a one-pintle-bolt, foam core rudder unless it were first retrofitted
with a positive stop-block attached to the rudder in the recess
below one or preferably both upper gudgeons. We hauled Itchen,
fitted blocks in both gudgeon recesses last week, and just got back
from a lovely trial sail – late November crisp light air, had a
normally busy South River anchorage all to ourselves, snug and warm
overnight with the cabin heater going. Lovely time of year to be on
the water, wonderful boat!

Hi to the group. Sorry I did not respond to the rudder problem before but I
have been underway. There are two bolts to the top two pintle. On my own
boat I inserted a teak pad under the bolt so it cannot come off
accidentally. If anyone has any questions catch me on WCZ8263@sailmail.com
