Sabb Double Pump Kit

Stan:
The price for the extra water pump kit is $416  from Sabb America.  Prices for diesel engine impeller pumps vary from about $150 for a gen-set engine to $300 for a propulsion engine - Boat US catalog.  The extra water pump mounts to the G engine where the present raw water pump is mounted.  The small raw water pump, which is presently installed, mounts to  the extra water pump - see attach image.  Because the extra water pump stands out 5" inches from the engine, when both pumps are mounted the total stand-off distance is estimated at 7 to 7 1/2".  Based on the attached image, I believe one may  be able to just mount the extra water pump kit and use a bronze/brass plate to seal the outside end of the larger pump, hence only one pump would have to be mounted.  You would need to check with Bill Miller at Sabb America.  If he has to inquire at Sabb Norway, well ....................................................................

In my opinion this would be the simplest and best solution.  Based on the area of the extra water pump diaphragm, the volume of water pumped is almost twice that of your present raw water pump.  This should be more than enough water to cool the G engine with "Tropical" sea water.  If you install both pumps, then you would have to install a recirculation loop around one pump.  You would need to have a ball valve in the loop to control the amount of water recirculating and the amount pumped through the engine.  Based on information in the manual, it may be possible to just control the water flow into the engine by partially opening or closing the raw water seacock.  This would eliminate the need for a recirculation loop.
For a "retired" R&D Chemist, my discussion may suggest I am regressing back to an engineer.  One of the main differences between chemist and engineers is:  engineers aspire to be chemists, whereas chemist aspire to be philosophers.   Fortunately, the distance between chemistry and philosophy is relative small compared to the distance between chemistry and engineering.

Rod, dare I ask the price of this larger pump? And do
I understand that it replaces the existing raw water
pump or is added to it?

Rod, it looks from the drawing as though the existing
salt water pump is part of the ‘complete unit’ of the
the big pump. And (as you mentioned)that portion of
the big pump we already have could be either used or
blocked off from the big pump. Therefore I would
assume we could just buy that portion of the big pump
system that we don’t already have. For a somewhat less
price of the complete unit.

At this point I’m not ready to buy either but it would
be good to know what options are available.
