Setting A Jib 8'' out on the ''Sprit

Hi,

I’m new to the list, and new to Cutter ownership. My Bill Garden
Designed “Spray”, a 27’ OD, 35’ OA Channel Cutter Replica was
recently rebuilt (wood hull, 1960) and I’ve been out sailing on S.F.
Bay only 3 times since. I rigged the bowsprit last night and up to
now have been sailing under main and club footed foresail. Now the
jib will be an option. Her sprit does not lend it self to crawling
out to bend a jib. The stays on either side of the sprit are in the
same plane as the bowsprit, so using them to climb out on isn’t very
realistic for bending the sail, or loosing gaskets, or hauling it in.

In my box of rigging, is what appears to be an “outhaul”, where a
ring rides on the sprit. From what I gather, the “stay” for the jib
is “mobile”, i.e. you bend the sail to the stay, then haul the stay
out on the 'Sprit, then hoist the stay/jib?

Not sure how the rig should go together…

The jib arrangement you discussed is very common on classic English Gaff Rigged Cutters.

The ring is hauled outboard with a single part purchase.  The out-haul block is attached to the cranse iron and used to pull the tack of the jib to the bowsprit's end.  On the Classic English Cutter, a two part purchase is used for the jib halyard.  In addition, the bobstay is a three or four-part tackle.  This is used to adjust the "down" tension on the bowsprit as the jib halyard is sweated up.

These setups are discussed in Martin Tregoning's Classic Boat Seamanship and Tom Cunliff's Hand Reef and Steer.
