Sparatan Seacocks

Steve,
I put Spartan Seacocks in my BCC and ordered them from a place called
Hamilton Marine. I had their catalogue around here but can’t seem to find
it. They were located somewhere on the east coast, possibly Maine.
Mike Pearson, the owner of Metaphora decided to change to a different
type of seacock when he hauled out a month ago. The ones he took off may be
of use to you. :Mike Pearson

The very best place to start for any and all hardware is the classified
section of WOODEN BOAT magazine, BOATBUILDER magazine, or try the boat
building community online (www.boatbuilding.com)

Hamilton Marine is an excellent source. As is Defender Industries,
Fishermans Supply on the west coast, or the mother lode of boat building
stuff; Jamestown Distributers. In Canada, Holland Marine products is really
top notch.

Spartan Hardware advertises in the magazines mentioned above. Their phone
number is (207) 371-2542 or FAX (207) 371-2024. Ask for their free catalog.

I may be wet behind the ears as a boat builder. But one thing I can tell
you about is where to get stuff!
You haven’t lived till you have gotten a blank look from the manager of a
hardware/ builder’s supply when you ask him where you might find CLENCH
RINGS. (I’ll be casting my own from silicon bronze for the wooden rudder
I’m building)

Go on over to boatbuilding.com with your search for VETUS controls and
leave a posting. Another really good place to go and ask is the
building/design section in the sailing forum of Compuserve.
If John Fox doesn’t know, it probably is no longer available.

Way more information here than you needed, but SOMEONE in this lot will be
able to help you.

Regards

i had all my seacocks frozen on my cape dory 26 (spartan was a subsidiary of
cape dory created just to manufacture their bronze hardware). spartaan was
spared in the foundering of cape dory and relocated to maine. they now have
their manufacturing done in the far east to the old patterns. the seacocks
are still available. the barrels and housings are mated pairs and are not
individually available, but i was able to bring mine back with lapping
compound (available at auto parts stores much cheaper than thru spartan ).
the problem i had was with the freeze bolts which are a 12-24 thread bronze.
mine were eaten up with corrosion (+/- electrolysis). at the time i was able
to get a few replacements thru jamestown distributors, but i think they no
longer carry them. spartan did not have any. if necessary you may consider
overdrilling and retapping to 1/4-20. there is a great amount of discussion
of spartan seacocks on the cape dory information exchange bulletin board.

Thank you for the information. I contacted Spartan yesterday, 207-371-2542,
and they are sending me a catalog. I also found Vetus Controls,
410-712-0740, and they also are sending me a catalog.
I got these numbers for Roger Olson, Sam L. Morse Co, he was very helpful.
By the way, if anyone is interested, Roger is looking for a partner in the
business. If he can find one he is thinking of starting to build a 34 foot
version of the BCC.
