STAINLESS STEEL WATER TANKS

Hi Folks,
Can anybody out there recommend a good source of information regarding the
building of stainless steel water tanks? Specifically what kind of
stainless, what to be leary of, what works and what does not? Any personal
experience you would like to pass on? Thanks in advance?

Sincerely,
John Stone

Hi John,

My two fresh water tanks are over twenty years old and have had literally no leaks or other problems with them. If I remember correctly they are made from ll gauge stainless, and believe them to be 316 but am not positive. We had them made with large inspection/cleaning access plates and are easily removable; one 30 gallon under the floors of the main saloon and another 12 gallon under the cockpit area. A friend made them and wouldn't tell me what they cost, so I can't help there.

Hi John,

Stainless steel water tanks are great. The only concern is matching the
welding rod to the material. If you use 316 be sure the welding rod is the
same. There have been tanks installed in older boats that used a different
rod, after many years, electrolysis effected the weld and small pin holes
developed.

Also be sure there is a baffle near the center. Follow Stan’s advice and be
sure to have large inspection plates installed on both sides of the baffle
for cleaning.

If I remember right, we (SLMCo.) paid about $500 per tank.
