Surprise

Hi All,

Drew OBrien is taking Surprise home to Maine. So Drew and Bernie and I sailed her to Block Island last week. We had a great sail. About 24 hours under spinnaker. Bernie gets credit for the picture. What fun we had!

Aloha,

Kate

What kind of speed were you able to make under spinnaker?

Aloha Jim,

On our trip to Block Island, the spinnaker was super because we were almost dead down wind for 24 hours. The spinnaker gave us a knot and a half more than jib alone. The wind speeds varied from 6-7 knots to 15. Top speed was 7.2 knots with wind 12-15 knots behind us. In general we cruised at 5.5 to 6.0. Without the spinnaker, the trip would have been much more tedious. We did about 5 knots with jib alone through the night.

A word of advise, which you have all hear before&take the spinnaker down BEFORE you want to. It gets a little harder as the wind speed increases, especially as we did not have the main to blanket it.

Have fun!

Kate
