Teak decks

I think SLM may have their teaks decks prefabricated. I know that
Morris Yachts and custom yacht builders are having their teak decks
prefabricated by TDK (Teak Decking Systems. )They take the deck
dimensions supplied by the builder or designer and build a custom
deck that is installed in sections. Very few screws are used since
it’s epoxied in place. Just curious if anyone knows anything about
this?

I don’t know about those decks but I have a wood boat
experienced friend who used the West Epoxy method
where a thin (about 5/16")teak plank is held down with
screws and washers until the glue sets and the screw
is removed. You wind up with a teak deck without any
plugs.
Unfortunitly even though he’s quite a woodworker and
followed the directions exactly, the deck began
spliting out from expansion (or lack of give between
the planks)and he had to remove it. Horror story. He
said his problem was Wests idea of using graphite
(black)epoxy between the planks to make it looked like
a caulked deck. The epoxy wouldn’t give when the
planks expanded and exploded(? his word)off the decks.

Lanny,
I did a total rebuild of a Norwegian pilot cutter that require new
decks. I removed the existing deck system, replaced all deck planking with
laminated thin sheets of marine ply, sealed it all with west system and then
applied a veneer teak deck over this. The teak has to be vertical grain,
quarter sawn. The west technical manual has the process and after reading
500 times it comes to you. Using ply, whether over the exist planking or
total rebuild, avoids the expansion contraction mentioned in the other
email. Taking my time and properly prepping allowed a beautiful teak deck,
NO plugs or deck leaks and liteweight. West is great for technical support.
Email if you want more info.
