tiller pilots

I am planning on installing an Autohelm 4000 gp tiller pilot. It has
relatively low current draw and is designed for boats up to about
15,00 lb of displacement. It has a separate control head which is
permantly mounted like a depth or speed instrument. Is there room for
the control head along with a regular combi speed-depth instrument
next to the companionway entry assuming that a compass goes on one
side? The control head is the same size as the Autohelm st 60
instrument head.
I am hesitant to mount it lower because of the risk offilling the
well and shorting it out.
Any thoughts?

Jim:

I found that the best resource for these kind of questions is
Tommy at Sam Morse. He has seen all that has and has not worked regards
factory installed options. You should have plenty of room next to the
companionway. I have an ST40 depth on the starboard side and it looks
positively lonely.

Best regards…Tom

Thanks Tom,
My hull should be molding today !

Jim,

I have three ST-60 instrument mounted on the port side of the companion way,
Wind, Tri-data and Flux gate Compass. No problems, the lower unit is lower
than I would like but works well.

I have the Autohelm 4000 installed with the control head mounted in the cockpit. As I don't go offshore I was not too much worried about filling it with water. I have noticed, however, that over the years(7) the control buttons have become a little unreliable. Probably just need a little cleaning. Might be better to mount it somewhere out of the weather if at all possible.
I also have the separate km & ds(Autohelm) on a swing bracket in the companionway. They are mounted one above the other and swing out into the companionway when in use. Access below is hindered only slightly.
Hope this helps
