Update on dream rigging

Hi folks,

Well it’s done, the new synthetic rig is on Shanti. This was a much larger project than I had initially imagined for many reasons. And I’m still not quit done. Probably my biggest problem was shipping. Actually had a hard time finding the clevis pins I needed.

Took Shanti for her tune up sail on Monday in 10-12 kts of wind. Not a real test, but close enough. The real test will come in the next couple of days when I have to beat against 20kt trade winds to sail up to the BVI from St. Thomas.

So far the rig is matching expectations. I love this stuff and now hate wire.

I have some posts on all this on Shanti’s blog at http://garyfelton.com/shanti/

When I return I will post a final analysis of synthetic rig.

Cheers and Happy New Year!
Gary

Looks great Gary!

I noticed your jib sheet fairlead point is very far forward… is your jib really small?

Pioneering stuff Gary!
Getting the lengths right seems to be the biggest hurdle and depends on one’s splicing skills.
Hmm…

Ben, it is the way the sail is cut. The foot is lower to the deck. Gives me a little more overlap with the staysail for more power. :sunglasses:

Michael, the splicing is EASY! The look of the splice is deceiving. In fact I have heard discussions that a simple bury splice is strongest. You just need to throw in some locking stitches. I will have more on that when I do my final report.
