Virus laden emails sent to members of the bcc mail list

It appears that we may have one or more members of the mail list who
have PC virus infections. While the virus does not appear to have
been sent to the mail list address (bcc at yahoogroups.com), it
apparently has been sent to some/all individual members. If you
received either of the following mails, please scan your PCs for
viruses:

Date Sent: Jun 24
From: bilh2001 (at) aol.com (“Bil Hansen”)
To: individual email addresses
Subject: Re: [bcc] hanked on jib

Date Sent: Jul 1 (not sure)
From: bernyandray (at) paracay.com (“bernyandray”)
To: individual email addresses (not sure)
Subject: [bcc] 2003 Rendezvous

Date Sent: Fri 7/18/2003 6:34 AM
From: Jim Hiller [jhiller at jamestowndistributors.com]
To: This field was blank
Re: [bcc] Re: Fuel purifiers and additives

The email header information was hacked, its not from Jim Hiller.
The actual sender was from comcast.net

Which may not mean much. Viruses
are sent either through a mail
server known to the infected
machine, but or through open mail
relays known to the virus. Many
viruses these days change the
subject line on a regular basis.
Since this virus is using boat
related subject lines, it’s a good
bet that it is scanning the
infected machine’s email box for
subject lines and email addresses
likely to fool at least some of
the next targets. You see how it
works? Person A got some mail from
Jamestown Distributors about
varnish. Their machine gets
infected with a virus, which sends
itself to random folks from A’s
contact list, using the subject
line about varnish, forging
Jamestown Distributors as the
sender. Which looks interesting to
you, right? BANG! You’re infected.

Bottom line: Disable HTML in your
email client. Read mail as plain
text. Don’t open or execute
attachments unless you were
expecting them. Don’t use Outlook
or Outlook Express.

If you worry you have been
infected, there are FREE, online
services that will scan your
machine. Here’s one:

Sorry, nothing to do about sailing
or BCCs here.
